Pay Range: $36.0000 to $57.5400 USD

The RN plans and implements nursing care for patients in the Emergency Department according to established policies and procedures while performing direct patient care for patients of all age groups and under a wide variety of circumstances.

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Vermont

Experience: At least one year of clinical experience preferred

Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, as required or obtained within 6 months if a new graduate. PALS, TNCC, ENPC, and CEN preferred.

Reports To: Nurse Manager & Emergency Services Director

Other Contacts: Shift administrator, physicians, patients, families, visitors, public, forensic staff, hospital staff, and other healthcare practitioners

Machinery or Equipment Used: Patient monitoring devices, cast removal saw, IV pumps, patient transport devices, needles/syringes, computer, basic office equipment, and other patient care equipment

Physical Demands: Occasional sitting, lifting up to 50 lbs., kneeling, crouching, overhead reaching, and awkward positions. Frequent: twisting, bending, squatting, stooping, reaching and pushing/pulling. Constant: standing and walking

Working Conditions: Exposure to crisis situations and unpleasant elements of acute traumatic injuries, accidents and illness. Frequently exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases. Exposed to hazards from electrical equipment. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and stress/pressure due to multiple patient needs

Required Protective Equipment: All Personal Protective Equipment and situation and patient condition dictates

Essential Functions:

• Incorporates appropriate assessment and intervention skills in all interactions and delivery of nursing care including: safety & protection, assessment, intervention skills, evaluation, equipment use and management
• Communicates with patients, team members, and management in an accurate and timely manner evidenced by: talks with and listens to patients/team members, reports pertinent, concise information with applicable follow-up, complete timely, accurate clinical documentation/order entry, protects confidentiality of patient/colleagues
• Applies critical thinking skills and utilizes best practices and current research. Organizes multitask workload, prioritizes and customizes patient plan of care, appropriately seeks assistance, collects/integrates data from patient and/or multiple sources, organizes/delivers care for multiple patient assignment
• Develops and maintain human care relationships. Adapts care management for diverse populations and environment, advocates for needs of patients and/or families, provides care in ethical and legal manner, refers concerns/issues to appropriate resources, collaborates with all members of the multidisciplinary care team, demonstrates a therapeutic relationship for patients well being
• Manages self and resources effectively. Acknowledges and adheres to limits of experience and capability, identifies learning needs and seeks resources, utilizes equipment and supplies appropriately, maintains clean, orderly environment of care, ensures noise and traffic control in "sensitive areas", seeks out and accepts feedback, requests assistance appropriately
• Applies leadership skills. Appropriately utilizes scope of practice for self and others, interacts with others in professional manner, manages conflict, delegates and assigns care, coordinates care within multi-disciplinary team, maintains professional conversation/conduct in environment of care
• Incorporates teaching in delivery of care with a focus on health promotion by: provides appropriate information to patient, assesses for barriers to learning, uses colleagues as a learning resource, provides counseling about health behaviors, supports the preceptorship program, students and job shadow experiences
• Applies knowledge integration skills for the patient population served within unit. Provides age specific care, applies knowledge of expected norms in planning care, applies new data to improve care, integrates technical, psychological, social, intellectual and physical skills
