AdHoc Group Against Crime is a nonprofit organization serving Kansas City since 1977. AdHoc has been a community resource that, through crisis intervention and prevention, supports individuals and families who are adversely affected by criminal behavior. AdHoc serves the entire Kansas City metropolitan area, including both sides of the state line.
AdHoc Group Against Crime serves as a trusted bridge between the community and law enforcement to make neighborhoods safe and secure. Specifically, AdHoc works to reduce violence, solve crimes, and address the conditions that give rise to violence and crimes.
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a senior executive responsible for leading financial strategy, financial operations, compliance, risk management, and long-term sustainability for a mission-driven social services organization. The CFO partners with the President/ Chief Executive Officer, senior leadership, board of directors, program staff, development staff, to ensure resources are managed responsibly and aligned with client services, community impact, contract obligations, and the organization’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute financial strategies that support the organization’s mission, strategic plan, service delivery model, program growth, and long-term sustainability.
  • Lead annual budgeting, multi-year forecasting, scenario planning, cash flow management, reserves planning, and resource allocation across social services programs.
  • Oversee accounting, financial reporting, payroll, tax filings, treasury, audit preparation, internal controls, and compliance functions.
  • Manage restricted and unrestricted funds, grant accounting, donor-designated funds, government contracts, fee-for-service revenue, reimbursement requirements, and funder compliance obligations.
  • Prepare and present accurate financial statements, dashboards, budget-to-actual analysis, program-level financial reports, and strategic recommendations to executive leadership, the board, and board committees.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations, funding requirements, grant agreements, contract terms, audit standards, IRS filings, cost allocation requirements, and applicable financial reporting obligations.
  • Partner with program, development, and operations leaders to build program budgets, monitor contract performance, support grant proposals, track service-line sustainability, and connect financial results with client outcomes.
  • Identify financial risks and opportunities that may affect service continuity, staffing capacity, reimbursement timing, compliance exposure, or program expansion, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain strong policies, internal controls, documentation standards, and financial procedures to safeguard charitable assets and support audit readiness.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop finance and accounting staff while promoting accountability, transparency, collaboration, and responsive service to program teams.
  • Manage relationships with auditors, banks, funders, grant administrators, government agencies, insurers, investment advisors, legal advisors, and other external stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, nonprofit management, public administration, economics, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • CPA, CMA, CFA, or equivalent professional certification preferred.
  • Significant progressive leadership experience in nonprofit finance, social services finance, human services administration, accounting, or mission-driven financial management.
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash management, fund accounting, grant accounting, restricted funds, government contracts, reimbursement models, and financial reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, internal controls, audit processes, tax filings, cost allocation, contract compliance, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Experience advising executive leadership, boards, Finance Committees, or Audit Committees on financial strategy, risk, sustainability, service-line performance, and organizational performance.
  • Experience supporting program leaders with financial analysis, contract monitoring, grant budgets, and data-informed decisions in a social services or community-based environment preferred.

  • Ability to operate effectively in a complex, mission-driven environment with multiple funding streams, reporting requirements, and community needs

Reporting Structure

The CFO typically reports to the President/Chief Executive Officer and works closely with the board of directors, Finance Committee, program director, compliance leaders, development staff, program staff, external auditors, banks, funders, government agencies, and other key stakeholders.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation is competitive within the nonprofit social services sector and based on organization size, operating budget, program complexity, funding sources, contract portfolio, and candidate experience. Benefits include health insurance reimbursement, retirement contributions, paid time off, professional development, flexible work arrangements, mission leave, employee assistance resources, and other benefits aligned with the organization’s values, workforce needs, and available resources.
