Position Summary
The Medical Assistant II is an experienced clinical support professional who performs the full scope of core Medical Assistant duties and serves as a dependable resource within the practice. In addition to direct patient care and clinical/administrative support, the MA II contributes to quality assurance, inventory control, staff onboarding, competency support, and reliable execution of daily clinical standards.
Requirements:Essential Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Support
- Prepare and room patients for visits; obtain and document vital signs, health history, and other required clinical information.
- Support physicians and other clinical team members with examinations, treatments, and in-office procedures within the employee's training, documented competency, applicable law, provider direction, and organizational policy.
- Set up EKGs and other ancillary testing; collect and process routine specimens and perform point-of-care testing as authorized.
- Administer immunizations, injections, and medications when permitted by applicable law and organizational policy and when required training, competency, orders, and supervision are in place.
- Prepare examination rooms and equipment, clean instruments as appropriate, and maintain rooms in a safe, organized, patient-ready condition.
Practice Workflow & Patient Service
- Receive and route telephone calls and electronic messages; obtain accurate patient information and update the medical record as appropriate.
- Support patient check-out, referrals, prior authorizations, laboratory coordination, and other clinical/clerical workflows as assigned.
- Ensure required forms, consents, and documentation are complete and routed appropriately.
- Maintain confidentiality and safeguard protected health information in accordance with organizational policy and applicable privacy requirements.
- Provide courteous, timely service and communicate effectively with patients, families, providers, and team members.
Quality, Training & Operational Support
- Complete all Medical Assistant I responsibilities and consistently demonstrate proficiency in foundational clinical and administrative workflows.
- Assist with onboarding, training, and competency evaluation of new Medical Assistants as assigned.
- Support inventory-management processes, including monitoring supply levels and helping ensure examination rooms are appropriately stocked.
- Maintain required clinical logs and routine checks, including refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications and supplies, oxygen, medication expiration dates, and sterilization-related logs as applicable.
- Review charts, laboratory results, and encounter documentation for completeness and identify items requiring follow-up or escalation.
- Assist with daily and monthly quality-assurance activities, including emergency-kit checks and other assigned clinical readiness reviews.
- Complete annual Career Ladder online requirements and skills assessments when applicable.
- Provide practical day-to-day support to other Medical Assistants and providers to maintain efficient patient flow.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Current Medical Assistant certification/registration through a recognized credentialing body (such as AAMA, AMT, NHA, NCCT, or RMA) required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association required.
- Demonstrated competency in Medical Assistant I responsibilities or equivalent ambulatory medical-assistant experience.
- Successful completion of applicable competency assessments and skills checklists within 90 days of hire or transfer into the role.
- Employees participating in the Medical Assistant Career Ladder must complete required level-specific training and assessments within established timelines.
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, basic patient care, and ambulatory clinical workflows.
- Strong communication, service, organization, prioritization, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced practice while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and patient focus.
- Ability to work independently within assigned responsibilities and collaboratively as part of a care team.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Outlook and Word, and the ability to learn electronic health record and practice-management systems.
- Demonstrated ability to coach, support, and reinforce clinical workflows with peers in a constructive and professional manner.
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to stand and sit for extended periods and move throughout a medical office during the workday.
- Ability to use fine motor skills to operate clinical and office equipment.
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds as required for essential job duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to receive and understand written and verbal instructions and use sound judgment for routine and complex problem-solving.
- Ability to travel to multiple practice locations when business needs require.
Scope, Compliance & Employment Standards
All duties must be performed within the Medical Assistant's education, training, documented competency, applicable law, provider direction, and organizational policies and procedures. The employee is expected to maintain patient confidentiality, follow safety and infection-prevention standards, report to work as scheduled, maintain professional conduct, and complete required training and in-services.
