North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is a historically Black university located in Durham, North Carolina, known as “The City of Medicine.” As a faculty member in the Department of Mass Communication, you will contribute to a legacy of academic excellence and community impact. Primary Function of Organizational Unit The Department of Mass Communication prepares students for careers in mass communication. It offers engaged learning, student media, research experiences, and connections to professional practice, emphasizing ethical, practical, and theoretical foundations. Primary Purpose of Position The faculty member will teach core and concentration courses in the Journalism concentration, serve as adviser for the student news publication Campus Echo, and mentor student journalists. Responsibilities also include recruiting and training student media staff, guiding external student competition participation, advocating for student press freedom, managing the student media budget, and developing innovative approaches to media challenges. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Awareness and commitment to the history, culture, and traditions of an HBCU. Willingness to stay current with student media trends and issues. Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design in mass communication. Knowledge of measurement of instructional outcomes. Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques. Understanding of appropriate learning strategies and strong problem‑solving and organizational skills. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. A terminal degree in mass communication, communication studies, media studies, or a closely related field. Multiple years of experience in guiding student news media or related professional experience. Key Responsibilities Instructional Engage in teaching, evaluation, and other instruction‑related duties to support the department’s mission. Recruit and retain students and guide them in developing high‑quality portfolio content. Support and guide external student competition participation. Participate in assessment activities related to instruction. Research Participate in scholarly research and/or creative activity at a level that leads to promotion and tenure. Public Service Serve as academic advisor for students, providing educational guidance and assistance. Provide service to the department, college, and university, attending staff meetings, faculty meetings, and university functions. Budgeting Develop and oversee budget planning for student media. Review and approve publication budget requests and allocate funds. Optimize budgets based on spend data and performance. Present annual budgets to campus administrators. Advocacy Skills Communicate advising philosophy and style to administrators. Establish collegial, professional relationships on campus. Assist student leaders in public relations and community communications.
