Supervisor Animal Facilities - Developmental Biology

Scheduled Hours 40 Position Summary Oversees facility operations, vivarium equipment, and animal laboratory processes. Directly supervises 6-15 husbandry personnel. Assists the Facility Manager in the management of the animal care and husbandry program in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of Animal Welfare Act, the Public Health Service, and University policies to assure a quality animal care program that supports the research and teaching at WashU. Job Description Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Plans, directs, supervises and coordinates the daily activities of the Animal Care Staff responsible for the daily care of research animals. Manages up 15 direct reports, including interviewing, on-the-job training, performance management and evaluation, career development discussions and oversight of employee work schedules and attendance. Ensures that the established SOPs are properly executed and department policies are followed. Schedules daily activities and distributes workload to staff. Trains the husbandry staff on SOPs and in daily duties. Monitors and manages employee work performance and associated files. Provides PI and lab staff facility walk through and barrier training. Supervisor may assist with technical procedures including animal identification, breeding and euthanasia. Conducts or oversees census and quality assurance activities in the facility. Performs additional duties as directed by the facility manager or the department. Working Conditions: Job Location/Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Requires extensive safety training. Alternative work schedules. Exposure to chemicals. High noise environment. On-Call (Beeper). Requires protective devices. Dust, dirt, grease or other disagreeable elements. Exposure to moving machinery. Exposure to animals. Physical Effort: Typically sitting at desk or table. Typically standing or walking. Typically bending, crouching, stooping. Repetitive wrist, hand or finger movement. Occasional lifting (30 lbs. or more). Equipment: Office equipment. Lab/research equipment. Simple hand tools. Heavy equipment (buffers, mowers, forklift, etc.). Preferred Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree Certifications ** /Professional Licenses ** : Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) - American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Work Experience: Laboratory Animal Care (3 Years), Supervisory (1 Year) Skills: Biomedical Research, Following Instructions, Leadership, Oral Communications, Physical Work Conditions, Positive Thinking, Quality Orientation, Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), Written Comprehension Grade R09 Salary Range $41,700.00 - $75,600.00 / Annually The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one’s qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget. The screenings will include criminal background check and, as applicable for the position, other background checks, drug screen, an employment and education or licensure/certification verification, physical examination, certain vaccinations and/or governmental registry checks.
