Job Description

The Packer plays a key role in keeping food production lines running efficiently and safely by packaging tortillas according to strict product specifications, food safety standards, and production schedules. This position involves operating packaging equipment, performing job rotations that include manual and automated packing tasks, completing production documentation, and supporting quality assurance activities while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area.

Responsibilities

• Perform all tasks in strict accordance with Safety and Food Safety Standards at all times.
• Participate in safety training programs and actively contribute to safety initiatives that promote a strong safety culture.
• Ensure full compliance with regulatory and company requirements, including SQF, GMP, HACCP, OSHA, Food Safety, Food Fraud/Defense, Allergens, Organic, and Gluten Free standards.
• Maintain thorough knowledge of the products being packed, including product specifications and the correct weight of each tortilla produced.
• Retrieve and review product specifications from the company ERP system prior to and during production.
• Identify and understand the specifications of boxes and bags used for packaging each product.
• Program date coding machines for bags and boxes according to product rotation and daily production requirements.
• Prepare the workstation at the start of the shift with the necessary bags, boxes, and packaging materials.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area throughout the shift, following good housekeeping policies and SQF guidelines.
• Follow the production schedule and specifications to meet established productivity and output goals.
• Participate in line rotation throughout the day or workweek, which may include moving to other lines, assisting coworkers, or cleaning lines during machine downtime or break and lunch coverage.
• Maintain continuous communication with the line leader and machine operators regarding any product deficiencies, such as raw or overcooked tortillas, incorrect weights, or size variations.
• Foster proactive communication and teamwork with coworkers and leadership to resolve issues quickly and maintain smooth operations.
• Operate packaging equipment such as Auto Baggers, Ilapak machines, and other automated baggers as required.
• Perform complete changeovers in the packaging area, including adjustments to the vision system, counter stacker, auto bagger, bag printer, and scales or weight systems.
• Enter production information accurately into the TGI Machine Log and complete product pathways in the TGI system.
• Record all downtime events in the Machine Log system in a timely and accurate manner.
• Retrieve packaging materials from the warehouse before and during runs, and return unused materials to warehouse storage at the end of each run.
• Use computers and RF guns proficiently to access information, scan materials, and complete required system entries.
• Rotate through assigned workstations, including packaging tortillas, boxing tortillas, stacking and lifting boxes up to 50 lbs, and palletizing product throughout the shift.
• Operate pallet jacks to move and transport finished product and raw materials to designated locations.
• Perform visual inspections of products and packaging and promptly report any quality issues or nonconformances.
• Assist with quality assurance programs, including pH verification, metal detection checks, recording pH levels, and identifying any out-of-specification results or line quality issues.
• Follow and comply with all SQF requirements and maintain workstations in compliance with SQF guidelines.
• Adhere to all company policies related to food safety, sanitation, environmental regulations, and third-party certifications.
• Comply with attendance and punctuality expectations and maintain a consistent state of alertness while performing job duties in a safe manner.
• Perform other related duties as assigned to support production, quality, and safety goals.

Essential Skills

• Grade school education; High School Diploma or GED is a plus.
• 1–2 years of experience operating or working with food manufacturing machinery or similar equipment.
• 1–2 years of experience following work task specifications, standard operating procedures (SOPs), recipes, or similar documented instructions.
• Ability to comply with and follow all food safety and third-party certification policies, including SQF, Gluten-Free, and Organic requirements.
• Proficient verbal and written communication skills to understand instructions and document production information.
• Proficiency in basic math skills and proper use of a calculator for counts, weights, and basic calculations.
• Basic computer skills, including the ability to enter data into systems such as ERP and TGI Machine Log.
• Ability to use an RF gun for inventory and material handling tasks.
• Proficient analytical and problem-solving skills to identify product or packaging errors and take appropriate action.
• Strong organizational skills to manage materials, documentation, and workstations efficiently.
• Ability to work at the required production speed while following all safety requirements.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 lbs on a frequent basis.
• Ability to stand and walk on hard surfaces for prolonged periods throughout the shift.
• Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, squat, crawl, reach, grasp, and work in adverse or awkward positions as required by the job.
• Reliable and punctual attendance with flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and off-shifts as needed.
• Ability to maintain a consistent state of alertness and perform essential job functions in a safe manner.
• Commitment to a drug and alcohol zero-tolerance policy in the workplace.
• Team-oriented mindset with a willingness to assist coworkers and support line rotation.
• Self-motivation and attention to detail to identify and correct errors in product and packaging materials.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is preferred and considered an advantage.
• Experience in general labor, packing, packaging, production, picking, material handling, palletizing, stacking, and inventory tasks.
• Familiarity with food manufacturing environments and general manufacturing practices.
• Experience accessing product specifications through an ERP system and entering production data into digital systems.
• Experience performing visual product inspections and reporting quality issues.
• Comfort operating pallet jacks and other industrial material handling equipment.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume production environment.
• Strong teamwork and collaboration skills to support line efficiency and coverage.
• Willingness to participate in ongoing training related to safety, food safety, and equipment operation.

Work Environment

This role is based in a food manufacturing facility with continuous production operations. You will spend most of your shift walking and standing on hard surfaces, frequently climbing and descending steps, and performing repetitive motions such as bending, kneeling, squatting, stooping, reaching, pulling, pushing, and lifting up to 50 lbs. The environment includes exposure to rotating and reciprocating machinery parts, as well as varying temperatures ranging from cool to hot and elevated noise levels. You will operate industrial equipment such as pallet jacks and work around automated packaging machinery including Auto Baggers and Ilapak equipment. The position requires adherence to strict food safety, sanitation, and housekeeping standards, including maintaining clean and organized workstations that meet SQF and related certification guidelines. Proper work attire and personal protective equipment are required to ensure safety and compliance in the production area.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elk Grove, CA.

The pay range for this position is $19.57 - $21.57/hr.
