Mammography Technologist

Job Summary

The Mammography Technologist is responsible for performing mammography examinations in accordance with ACR requirements. This position assists with breast ultrasound, stereotactic biopsy, breast localization, and other radiologic guided procedures performed within the Breast Center.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic and screening mammographic examinations on adult, adolescent, and geriatric patients in a professional manner.
• Conduct mammographic imaging for breast needle localization procedures and stereotactic procedures, including setup and cleanup.
• Assist in procedures using ultrasound guidance.
• Provide immobilization devices, select appropriate technical factors based on individual patient needs, and operate equipment for specific procedures.
• Properly identify patient films with correct name, x-ray number, and side markings, and initial all films.
• Develop exposed x-ray film using processing methods.
• Complete patient requisitions with necessary details including technologist's initials, date, number, and film size.
• Assist with quality control procedures and documentation covering phantom images, darkroom fog tests, screen-film contact tests, repeat analysis, and other necessary checks.
• Provide breast self-examination instruction and other patient education, including pre- and post-procedure instructions.
• Prepare cases for imaging, ensuring charts and films are ready.
• Compile statistics for patient follow-ups, tracking of breast localizations, and ultrasound examinations.
• Document procedures related to quality control and assurance for mammography, ensuring compliance with ACR, MQSA, NJ State, and FDA standards.
• Maintain patient records with pertinent information about patients.
• Identify and address the specific needs of the patient population served, adjusting care as necessary.
• Communicate effectively with patients and caregivers at their appropriate level.
• Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
• Adhere to organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Required Skills & Experience

• Minimum 2 years of prior experience as a Licensed Mammography Technologist.
• Proficiency in digital screening mammography and diagnostic mammography.
• Familiarity with breast positioning and compression techniques.
• Experience with 2D and 3D mammography (Digital Breast Tomosynthesis), and other specific imaging techniques.
• Knowledge of BI-RADS® and image quality assessment.
• Ability to operate and troubleshoot mammography equipment.
• Understanding of radiation safety principles and regulatory compliance.
• Skilled in patient screening and history collection and familiar with EMR/Epic documentation.
• Current CPR/BLS certification is required.

Education & Certification

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduate of an AMA approved School of Radiologic Technology.
• Must have ARRT certification and obtain mammography certification within the first three months of employment.
• Active Diagnostic Radiography License is required.
