Role Summary Police Officer Candidates are non‑sworn members of the Simmons University Police and Public Safety Department who work in a team‑based environment to provide public safety services with dignity and respect. Candidates will participate in a Massachusetts Police Training Council (MPTC) recruit‑officer police academy and, upon successful graduation and POST certification, will be assigned as Police Officers. Responsibilities include patrolling university campuses, preventing crime, engaging community members, and responding to calls for service. Essential Duties Provide and restrict access to university facilities by conducting locking and unlocking operations. Prevent criminal activity through visible, omnipresent patrols. Participate in crime‑prevention briefings for the community. Attend community events and speak with students, faculty, and staff about safety strategies. Operate department communication equipment, answer telephone inquiries, dispatch units, operate the paging system, and monitor alarm and CCTV systems. Take emergency and routine calls for service, record details, dispatch resources, and provide information to responding officers. Demonstrate working knowledge of all relevant Rules, Procedures, Standard Operating Procedures, and Emergency Response Protocols as a dispatcher. Interact with electronic database systems such as Computer Aided Dispatch, Video Insight, PTZ Cameras, IPARC, Bosch‑Telex, C*Cure, ARMS, Web RMV, CJIS, and Workday. Support all university departments, especially Residential and Student Life and Buildings and Grounds. Communicate with BPD, BFD, BEMS, and other emergency agencies to coordinate public safety on campus and surrounding areas. Issue emergency and routine notifications to university and outside officials, including Public Safety command, Buildings and Grounds staff, Student and Residential Life staff, Health Center and Counseling staff, BPD, BFD, and BEMS, as well as dispatchers at other area colleges. Monitor security and life‑safety systems to ensure proper operation. Perform safety and security inspections of campus facilities, grounds, and equipment on foot, bicycle, or motor vehicle. Assist with parking enforcement and monitoring of parking resources. Perform other duties assigned by the Chief of Police or designee as necessary to support department operation. Position Requirements High School Diploma (Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred). Age at least 21 years at the time of application. Valid Massachusetts Class D driver’s license upon appointment. Possession or ability to obtain a Massachusetts Class A Large Capacity License to Carry Firearms. Completion of all MPTC pre‑academy entrance requirements. Completion of a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) certified basic police Recruit Officer Course. POST certification maintained throughout employment. Special State Police powers under M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63. Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff’s powers. Commitment to a minimum of three (3) years of service following completion of the university‑sponsored police recruit academy; early termination subject to reimbursement of training costs at $600.00 per week of academy attendance, with forgiveness paid at a rate of 1/36 per month of service. Compensation and Benefits Initial hourly pay: $22.59 (annualized $47,000). Upon completion of the academy: $28.28 per hour (annualized $58,822). The hourly or annual salary range is $18.80 – $30.48 for H05 positions. This is a benefits‑eligible position, including health benefits, retirement savings, and work‑life balance initiatives such as flexible hours.
