Recovery Specialist - Substance Use Disorders (Full-Time, 2nd shift)

The Recovery Specialist has experience with behavioral health services and is willing to use and share their lived experience and first‑hand knowledge with hospital patients and their family members to provide expertise around the recovery process, symptom management, and the persistence required to achieve a recovery‑oriented and satisfying life. They engage to create warm hand‑offs between acute inpatient treatment and other levels of care, ensuring rapid access to drug, alcohol, or mental health services to improve adherence to treatment recommendations. The Recovery Specialist helps patients and families identify opportunities from a strength‑based approach to enhance life‑domain needs. Hours: Full‑time, 40 hours/week, 2nd shift Job Location: Grand View Health, Emergency Department, 700 Lawn Avenue, Sellersville, PA Job Duties and Responsibilities Engage in brief relationship building and active listening with clients receiving treatment in the emergency room and medical inpatient settings who have a substance use disorder. Utilize best practices such as motivational interviewing and stages of change to provide supportive coaching and encouragement to clients contemplating or actively seeking help with substance use treatment and recovery. Ensure all interactions are strength‑based, recovery‑oriented, and reflect an understanding of multiple pathways and definitions of recovery. Conduct substance use screening, assessment, brief intervention, and referral to treatment and/or other applicable community resources and services. Intervene in person face‑to‑face, over the phone, or via telehealth. Use ASAM or similar criteria to determine the most appropriate treatment level based on the patient’s clinical presentation. Coordinate with insurance companies to complete pre‑certification as appropriate. Maintain an in‑depth understanding of MAT options—including methadone, naltrexone, and buprenorphine—and counsel patients objectively on MAT. Outreach to, engage, and provide education for family members, natural supports, and other professionals regarding substance use disorders and available programs/resources. Participate in team‑based care and work cooperatively with other medical professionals and county‑wide personnel involved in the Warm Handoff program. Document each service‑related contact in case notes according to program standards and log interactions into tracking spreadsheets. Update case outcomes and write narrative outcomes for success stories. Engage in trainings and education sessions on the warm handoff process for medical professionals and stakeholders. Coordinate safe transportation for patients to ensure door‑to‑door treatment placement. Maintain a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record in accordance with St. Luke’s policy. Maintain confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/Entity and properly release information as required. Comply with Network and departmental policies regarding employee, patient, and environmental safety and meet reporting requirements. Demonstrate and model the Network’s PCRAFT values during interactions with all customers. Demonstrate performance improvement in clinical care/outcomes, customer/service improvement, operational system/process, and safety. Demonstrate financial responsibility and accountability through efficient use of resources in daily procedures and practices. Comply with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code. Demonstrate competency in assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development, and appropriate communication with patients of varying ages. Participate in a rotating on‑call schedule. May need to travel to other B‑Cares affiliated hospitals to deliver services. Physical and Sensory Requirements Sitting for up to 5 hours per day, 2 hours at a time. Standing for up to 1 hour per day, 1 hour at a time. Walking for up to 2 hours per day, 20 minutes at a time. Occasionally use fingers to turn pages. Frequently use hands to write, type, and hold charts. Rarely use hands or fingers for firm grasping or twisting/turning. Frequently use upper extremities to lift and carry up to 10 pounds. Frequently stoop, occasionally squat, and rarely reach above shoulder level. Hearing is required for normal conversation in person or on the telephone. Seeing is required for general vision, near vision, far vision, color vision, and peripheral vision. Education and Training High School Diploma or GED required. Eligible to earn the Certified Recovery Specialist (CRS) or Certified Family Recovery Specialist (CFRS) certification within 1 year of hire and maintain the certification. A bachelor’s degree is also acceptable. Qualifications and Experience Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license accepted by the Network’s insurance carrier and a good driving record.
