Position Title: Bus Monitor
Building: District-Wide
Reports to: Transportation Director and/or designee
Hourly Rate: $17.25 (after probation $17.50 per hour)

District Description:
Ypsilanti Community Schools is a small urban district conveniently centered around the major freeways (I-94 & US-23) within 5 minutes of Eastern Michigan University, 15 minutes from the University of Michigan. We have approximately 3,900 students, 3 Early Childhood Learning Centers, 1 International Baccalaureate with Prek-5, 3 Elementaries, 1 Middle School, and 1 High School which features 2 programs within the building STEM and AC Tech, and 1 Alternative Education building (ACCE). YCS is a systemic reconfiguration Blueprint District which aims to dramatically improve student learning in a short amount of time, anchoring a culture of collective responsibility that is collegial, collaborative, and professional. It aims to ground a safe, orderly and respectful environment for all students that promotes excellence.

Position Description:
To transport students to and from school and other sites within designated route(s) and to ensure the safety of the student passengers while in a school vehicle. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class is responsible for the monitoring of behavior of students on the bus and enforcing the safety rules.


Qualifications:

1. High School Diploma or equivalent
2. Knowledge of first aid protocol
3. Ability to pass a DOT drug and alcohol test
4. Ability to pass a LiveScan background check
5. Ability to take Early Childhood classes and pass them.
6. CPR Training

Position Responsibilities:

1. Knows the route and remains alert to monitor the welfare of passengers while in route
2. Communicates behavior problems and conditions of various stops with the driver
3. Assists in pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus
4. Assists students in the loading and unloading process
5. Cooperates and communicates with school personnel, students, and parents
6. Attends all safety and training meetings
7. Conducts emergency evacuation from the bus, including use of exiting by emergency door
8. Opens and closes service doors and moves up and down steps multiple times daily
9. Cleans the inside of the bus
10. Assists driver when necessary to safely direct the vehicle backwards
