What You'll Do as a Float Phlebotomist

• Collect venous and/or capillary blood specimens on neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients, both at the bedside and in the outpatient area.
• Float between Watauga Medical Center and Cannon Memorial Hospital as assigned to meet staffing needs.
• Apply working knowledge of the circulatory system, venipuncture technique, and medical terminology to ensure safe, accurate collections.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, visitors, colleagues, physicians, leadership, and volunteers.
• Respond quickly and accurately to emergencies and changes in patient condition.
• Support top-tier outcomes for patient experience, quality, and safety.
• Approach work with a bias for action, efficiency, and personal accountability, modeling UNC Health Appalachian's Mission, Vision, and Values.
• Foster professional, productive working relationships that promote a healthy work environment.

Qualifications

• Education:
  • High school graduate, with formal training or on-the-job training sufficient to qualify for certification as a Phlebotomist.
• Experience:
  • Minimum of 100 successful venipunctures and 50 capillary collections completed during training.
  • Previous experience as a phlebotomist preferred.
• Licensure/Certifications:
  • Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy program, or documented on-the-job training with a minimum of 100 successful venipunctures and 50 capillary collections.
  • Phlebotomist certification through an accredited testing agency preferred, but not required.
  • National certification preferred, but not required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association required at time of hire.
• Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong communication skills; ability to work within the chain of command using positive verbal and non-verbal techniques.
  • Competence in processing specimens safely and effectively within the limits of certification and hospital policy.
  • Exceptional customer service for patients, families, staff, and physicians.
  • Proficiency with laboratory computer programs; ability to type at least 25 WPM.
  • Comfortable and flexible working across multiple facility locations.

Physical & Work Environment

• Continuous standing and walking, often 8+ hours per shift ; frequent bending, squatting, twisting, turning, and reaching.
• Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull 50+ lbs ; manual dexterity and mobility required.
• Frequent hand, finger, and wrist repetition; near visual acuity and close eye work; speaking, reading, and writing for extended periods.
• Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, reagents, and laboratory specimens .
• Exposure to hazards from electrical/mechanical equipment and to ionizing/nonionizing radiation (including x-ray and microwave).
• Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays) and emergencies.
