Position Description
The DFO will oversee CTUL’s management of finance, fundraising, administration and compliance. The DFO will be a change agent in driving best practices in support of the organization’s objectives. We seek a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic, and process-minded leader with experience scaling organizations, and developing a learning culture among a diverse and talented staff.
This is an outstanding opportunity for a senior manager with top-level people skills, and a proven track record of creative problem-solving, operational leadership, and financial oversight. They will join a successful mission-driven advocacy organization and help lead it to become even more efficient, effective and nimble.
This position reports to the Executive Director.
Primary Responsibilities but not limited to:
Strategy and vision
- Ensure that the organization has the financial, fundraising and operational systems to achieve its strategic goals and objectives.
- Collaborate closely with the Executive Director to help guide the overall management of the organization.
Financial stewardship
- Supervise the Finance and Operations Lead and lead the operations team.
- Manage the relationship with the outsourced accounting vendor.
- Lead strategic financial planning and budgeting, and ensure that the organization has efficient and effective financial systems that support the organization’s mission.
- Ensure transparent financial reporting that informs decision-making in a strategic way, including reporting to the Executive Director and Boards; and regular budget updates to team budget holders and to the staff.
- Advise the Executive Director and other key members of senior management on financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, growth priorities, and policy matters.
- Controls: Be accountable for implementing best practices on financial controls systems at all levels of the organizations.
- Audit process: Supervise the preparation of external financial audits, and liaise with the boards of directors and the audit committees on audit planning, review and approval.
- Ensure that CTUL systems are optimized for financial management, controls and audit compliance.
- Manage organizational insurances
Compliance
- Bottom-line compliance at CTUL, and ensure that the organizations meet all regulatory and reporting requirements, including financial regulations, tax requirements, and other reporting that is required for political and nonprofit organizations, including campaign finance and lobbying reports as needed.
- Ensuring c3 / c4 compliance and proper separation
Operational leadership
- Ensure that CTUL programs have the operational and logistical support they need to be successful.
- Create new operational systems and lead with innovation to meet the organization’s changing needs.
- Ensure that the organization has appropriate data, IT and online security resources in place, working with external vendors as needed.
- Oversee facilities, travel, physical security, computer hardware and events management.
Qualifications:
- Have 5+ years of relevant experience in a similar position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Have had financial and compliance leadership roles, with experience in c3-c4 related organizations preferred.
- Have superior personnel management ability, with strong mentoring and coaching experience on teams with diverse levels of expertise.
- Have excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills including the ability to lead a range of stakeholders in establishing a shared vision and executing it together.
- Are an entrepreneurial, flexible team player who can think experimentally and can take a learning approach to our work.
- Are organized, detail-oriented and experienced in managing complex projects
- Have exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with management, boards of directors, and staff.
- Possess confidentiality, integrity, and a sense of humor.
- Are self-motivated, efficient, and focused on results.
Salary and Benefits
CTUL has a tiered salary range set by the Staff and Board based on the principles of economic justice and inclusion. This salaried position is currently compensated at $87,550 per year. This full-time position will normally work 80 hours per pay period, including some work on evenings and weekends. Benefits include: 3 weeks paid vacation, sick days, 5 recuperation days, 19 paid holidays, 90% employer-paid medical and dental insurance for you and your immediate family, 100% employer-paid vision and life insurance, a monthly phone stipend, and an annual end of year bonus of 5% of your annual salary which can be used towards a retirement fund.
