Rhode Island Political Organizer

Working Families Party

Job Description

Job Description

About the Working Families Party

The Working Families Party (WFP) is the progressive party for the multiracial working class, fighting for a nation that works for the many, not the few. We recruit, train, and support transformational candidates up and down the ballot — and run them to win.

We believe that no matter where we come from or what our color, most of us want the same things. We want to earn enough to thrive, not just survive, and leave a better future for our kids. We want healthy food and clean water, safe neighborhoods and a safe world. We want to be free.

The Working Families Party is regular people coming together across our differences to make a better future for us all. We’re a multiracial party that fights for workers over bosses and people over the powerful. We want an America which realizes the promise – unrealized in our history – of freedom and equality for all.

About The Rhode Island Political Organizer

The Rhode Island Working Families Party seeks a full-time, permanent Political Organizer to lead the growth of our grassroots base and organizing operation in Rhode Island in support of our electoral goals and policy priorities. The RI Political Organizer is responsible for developing, executing, and iterating on a program to recruit, train, and organize WFP members and volunteer leaders to help our candidates win and our campaigns succeed.

This position is supervised by the RI State Director, and includes local and national professional development opportunities in areas such as management, organizing, communications, electoral campaigns, and fundraising.

This is a full-time role. While this is a hybrid position, it does require significant in-person work, especially during campaign season, as well as evening and weekend work 1-3+ days/week. Ability to travel locally around Rhode Island is required.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Cultivate, strengthen, and grow Rhode Island’s WFP membership base
    • Lead efforts to organize Rhode Islanders into WFP and grow the Party’s membership base in Rhode Island
    • In collaboration with the State Director, develop a cohesive membership program and strategy that builds durable organizing infrastructure, leverages volunteer teams, and empowers activist leaders
    • Plan and execute member meetings, socials, legislative debriefs, kick-offs, and other member-focused gatherings/events
    • Manage member communications and digital organizing activities, including emails, social media, mass texting, and other tools/strategies in coordination with regional Communications Director and RI State Director
    • Help grow support for and engagement in Working Families Power’s issue and electoral priorities
    • Build and sustain relationships with individual activists, members, and leaders
    • Manage contact lists and maintain up-to-date records and engagement data
  • Advance RI WFP’s electoral program
    • Support recruitment of candidates for offices across Rhode Island
    • Build and lead programs to train candidates, campaign volunteers, and campaign staff in electoral work
    • Assist endorsed candidates in forming and executing strong campaign plans, including identifying needs for training, tools, and capacity building
    • Lead member engagement in electoral campaigns, including forming and training an activist leader team focused on canvassing and volunteer engagement in campaigns
  • Organize RIWFP party building activities
    • Contribute to and help shape RI WFP’s state power strategy in coordination with State Director, State Committee, and movement partners
    • Organize opportunities for members to take leadership in movement-building work
    • Develop and facilitate meetings, teach-ins, and training opportunities for WFP activists
    • Plan action opportunities, including in-person events, phone/text banks, and canvasses that can grow WFP membership through supporting candidates or priority issues
      • Build relationships with coalitions and partner organizations that align with WFP or Working Families Power goals
    • Support WFP membership engagement in candidate endorsement processes and member representation on the State Committee
  • Raise funds to drive RIWFP’s work
    • Set and meet annual dues and member recruitment goals
    • Organize and staff occasional events, such as house parties, in coordination with fundraising activities led by the State Director
  • Other duties as assigned by the State Director
Skills and Qualifications

Required

  • At least 4 years of relevant professional experience
  • Demonstrated track record of commitment to social, economic, and racial justice
  • Familiarity with and record of competence in electoral campaigns
  • Clear understanding of the principles, strategies, tools, and tactics of community organizing
  • Demonstrated ability to engage activists around a cause
  • Ability to communicate compellingly about WFP’s work and inspire others to action
  • Drive and tenacity to advance our mission, values, and statewide goals
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to clearly communicate and collaborate with colleagues and partners
  • Willingness for regular in-state travel

Preferred

  • Experience managing electoral campaigns

Salary & Compensation

The final salary will be determined based on an internal equitable scale that takes into consideration years of experience, geographic location, and final job description. The upper end of the salary range is reserved for individuals who significantly exceed the minimum qualifications and years of experience.

This is full-time, permanent position. While this is a hybrid position, it does require significant in-person work, especially during campaign season, as well as evening and weekend work 1-3+ days/week. Ability to travel locally around Rhode Island is required.
