Accountant

The City of Winter Haven is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Accountant to join our Finance team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining financial records, ensuring compliance with regulations, preparing financial statements, and assisting with reporting activities. Reconciles balance sheet accounts including accounts payable, accrued wages, capital assets, debt, and assists in year-end accruals. Maintains capital assets and reconciles to the General Ledger. Reviews daily cash receipt batches and compares to bank reports. Reconciles monthly bank statements. Prepares monthly entries for interest and bank fees. Monitors Utility accounts receivable and daily deposits. Reviews and posts month-end closing entries. Maintains thorough documentation for audit and grant purposes. Cross trains in various accounting functions to provide operational support and continuity. Serve as backup for assigned financial processes as needed. Assists in preparing year-end audit schedules. Completes special projects and process improvements initiatives as assigned. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of accounting principles and procedures, with strong verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrates effective research and problem-solving abilities, along with the capacity to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities. Able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word, with the ability to effectively utilize financial accounting system applications. Minimum Education & Experience Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field from an accredited four-year college or university. Accounting experience preferably in governmental accounting or governmental auditing. An equivalent combination of education and experience that is determined to be directly related to the specific requirements may be substituted.
