Title Counselor - PT - Talent Search Department TRiO Reports To Director TRIO Programs Position Type Staff Position Summary Under the leadership of the Trio Director, the Talent Search Counselor provides academic, career, and educational counseling, assists with college admissions and financial aid, and offers motivational support and advocacy for program participants. The counselor is responsible for implementing and achieving all goals, objectives, and standards of the Talent Search Program as outlined by the U.S. Department of Education. Services include academic instruction, mentoring, tutorials, and counseling for students in grades six through twelve, delivered on the NJIT campus and at assigned target schools. Responsibilities Screen middle and high school students, former high school and college students who have not completed secondary or post‑secondary education, to determine program eligibility. Collect, analyze, and maintain student data, including report cards, test scores, and Personal Educational Plans, to improve service delivery and outcomes. Develop and maintain a file on each eligible participant for education and career planning. Supervise and conduct group counseling, individual counseling, and personal development activities. Organize and conduct career workshops, seminars, and other educational activities; conduct entrance and exit interviews of program participants. Assist the Program Director in program planning and evaluation, reviewing admission applications and financial aid, assessing educational needs, and developing goals for project participants. Additional Functions Assist in developing program proposals and preparing reports. Assist in the development and implementation of the curriculum. Perform other duties as assigned. Prerequisite Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Counseling, Student Personnel Services, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field. Two or more years of counseling experience, academic advising, or teaching experience at the middle school, high school, or post‑secondary level. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated skills in individual and group counseling techniques. Experience in conducting testing and training activities. Basic knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite. Work on Saturdays and during off‑hours is required. At the university's discretion, education and experience prerequisites may be waived if the candidate demonstrates an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing them for success in the position. Preferred Qualifications Master's Degree in Counseling, Student Personnel Services, Psychology, or a related field. Experience working with minority and disadvantaged students. Knowledge of TRiO programs is helpful. Salary Information In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the hourly range for this position is $40.00–$50.00 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, and market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, or other items.
