Attorney I or Attorney II - 36332 Location: Pierre, SD | Salary: $ Depending on Experience | Pay Grade: L1 or L2 | Closing Date: Open Until Filled Overview The Department of Social Services seeks an Attorney committed to serving the public. As the largest state agency, DSS attorneys engage with a wide variety of legal topics, including child protection, foster care and adoption; Medicaid and behavioral health; food and nutrition support, income and work programs; child support; professional licensing; and key public policy decision‑making. The role is practiced before South Dakota’s Supreme Court, circuit courts, and administrative law judges. Responsibilities Represent the State of South Dakota in appellate and administrative hearings, including drafting appellate briefs. Provide general counsel services to licensing boards and other state agencies. Handle cases related to child abuse and neglect, child support enforcement, professional licensing, open meetings and records, child welfare agency licensing, Medicaid, and behavioral health services. Maintain a high level of effort and commitment, plan and organize work activities, and represent the Department with integrity and enthusiasm. Work cooperatively with others, promote a friendly work climate, and achieve shared goals. Education & Licenses Graduate of an accredited law school. Member of the South Dakota State Bar or willing and qualified to become a member and qualify for appointment as a Special Assistant Attorney General. Attorney level will be determined based on experience and qualifications. Ideal Candidate Displays high standards of ethical conduct. Communicates effectively and efficiently. Understands litigation practice and strategies. Exercises sound judgment and takes prompt, decisive action. Analyzes information, issues, and precedents to arrive at logical interpretation. Works independently while accepting guidance and soliciting input. Actively seeks, collects, and evaluates information to learn more about issues. Plans and organizes work activities, adjusts to multiple demands, and prioritizes tasks to meet deadlines. Additional Requirements Must attach a resume when applying.
