Sr Lead Software Engineer - Platform Engineering - Austin

Salary: $61,000 - 101,000 per year Requirements:

• Formal training or certification in software engineering concepts, plus at least five years of applied experience.
• Significant Java engineering experience, including demonstrable depth in framework or platform library development and familiarity with versioning, compatibility, and shared-library testing challenges.
• Strong knowledge of Spring Boot internals, including auto-configuration, condition evaluation, bean lifecycle, and application context interactions.
• Experience creating and maintaining automated tests for libraries or frameworks, including integration harnesses that exercise downstream behavior.
• Understanding of semantic versioning, backward-compatibility contracts, breaking changes, and strategies for supporting multiple versions.
• Solid experience with containerized applications and runtimes, including managed image strategies, image layering, JVM and garbage-collection settings, sidecar patterns, and framework impacts on container behavior.
• Experience leading the effective use of approved AI-assisted software development tools, with the ability to set expectations for validating outputs for correctness, performance, and security.
• Knowledge of responsible AI practices in engineering, including data sensitivity, secure handling of inputs and outputs, security and resiliency expectations, and coaching engineers on safe, compliant adoption.
• Hands-on experience with cloud CI/CD tools, including Terraform for infrastructure as code and Spinnaker for deployment pipelines, and knowledge of building, versioning, and deploying platform software in a cloud-native environment.
• Strong system design skills and ability to assess architectural trade-offs, particularly those affecting a large user base over multiple years.
• Proven technical leadership, including mentoring engineers, conducting substantive code reviews, and improving team-wide quality.
• Preferred: Experience with Kafka, Cassandra, or OpenTelemetry instrumentation at the framework or starter level.
• Preferred: Experience building or maintaining an internal Spring Boot Java framework or an equivalent proprietary platform library in a large organization.
• Preferred: Experience in a large-scale engineering organization where platform decisions affect many teams and migrations require broad coordination.
• Preferred: Financial services experience and understanding of the regulatory, audit, and controls environment for banking platforms.
• Preferred: Experience leading or contributing to geographically distributed teams.

• Design, build, and maintain our proprietary Java framework based on Spring Boot, including starters, auto-configuration, dependency management, and integrations with messaging, data, and observability libraries.
• Own and evolve framework versioning and release practices, supporting multiple active major versions and coordinating consumer migrations.
• Develop and maintain the frameworks test automation strategy, including unit, integration, and contract testing to validate changes before releases reach more than 1,000 application teams.
• Conduct thorough, high-quality pull request reviews, explaining feedback and raising the technical standards of the team.
• Lead our approach to containerized delivery, including framework integration with managed images, runtime behavior, and alignment with the platforms image strategy.
• Contribute to shared platform services that applications connect to at runtime, while considering the full build-to-runtime lifecycle.
• Promote enterprise-approved AI-assisted engineering practices to improve code quality, delivery speed, and operational outcomes; establish consistent validation through secure coding, peer review, and automated testing, and encourage reuse of effective approaches.
• Use software development lifecycle tools, including approved AI-assisted development and automation capabilities, to increase the value of automation.
• Participate in global platform design discussions, represent the Austin teams perspective, and contribute to architectural decisions across locations.
• Diagnose and resolve complex, cross-cutting problems rooted in the framework layer rather than in individual consumer applications.
• Apply system design principles to framework and platform challenges, making and clearly communicating consequential design decisions.
