Benefits Distinctive career advancement opportunities throughout the state system Strong, flexible retirement benefits including PERA Defined Benefit Plan or PERA Defined Contribution Plan plus 401(k) and 457 plans Medical and dental health plans Paid life insurance Short and long‑term disability coverage 11 paid holidays per year plus vacation and sick time Employee wellness programs Tuition reimbursement Training opportunities and more Responsibilities Provide routine and emergency medical care, on‑call assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of inmates in one or more prison clinical settings Conduct medical/physical examinations Order and interpret diagnostic tests and diagnose medical conditions Prescribe medications and treatment Educate patients about preventive health care Ensure minor medical procedures are performed on‑site Maintain accountability for the work product of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, including clinical supervision and professional development activities Participate in the monthly on‑call schedule and provide on‑site assistance to other DOC clinical units as needed Provide instruction, demonstration, and training to other health care professionals Offer medical advice to other organizational units or health care specialties through consultation Advise management on the development of medical programs, treatment standards, and clinical pathways Ensure computer data entry, referrals, consultations, medical reporting, co‑signature, and inmate grievance requirements are completed in accordance with DOC policies and State statute Maintain problem lists and M‑Code ratings in inmates’ health records; update housing and work restrictions and obtain authorization for consultations, diagnostic procedures, and surgeries Participate in restraining an inmate primarily for medical reasons, if required Attend quarterly medical review board meetings, monthly physician round table meetings, and other division meetings Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado as a Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) Board eligible (completed residency) or board certified in one of the following specialties: Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Preventive Medicine Provide board certification or proof of board eligibility and valid DEA license by attaching to the application or emailing View email address on click.appcast.io Complete the "Work Experience" section with all relevant experience related to the position. Required Competencies Ability to provide direct patient care to inmates Knowledgeable in full‑Spectrum primary care Skilled in office‑based procedures Maintain professionalism in a complex environment Excellent written and verbal communication skills Excellent interpersonal skills; collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders Read, comprehend, and communicate fluently in English Create accessible documents and technical content following plain language guidelines Self‑control, strong sense of ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations Remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure Tolerate stress, confinement, and high‑stakes interaction Preferred Qualifications Experience providing medical care in a correctional environment Board certified in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine Experience managing chronic medical conditions as a Physician Conditions of Employment Must be 21 years of age Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record Possess a high school diploma or GED No felony convictions; adherence to U.S. law regarding sexual offense and harassment statutes Legally eligible to work in the United States; no sponsorship for non‑residents Successfully pass all modules of the six‑week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including Defensive Tactics Possess the physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics, including lifts, takedowns, striking and resisting strikes, baton use, and repeated kneeling and rising Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and while on assignment Must be able to see and hear adequately to observe, address, and respond to safety and security breaches Seize, hold, control, or subdue violent or assaultive persons when necessary Demonstrate agility, strength of all four limbs, and ability to walk and climb stairs consistently Work in environments with fluctuating noise and temperature, including inclement weather and concrete floor/wall settings Willing and able to travel and work various shifts, including graveyard schedules Undergo TB screening upon hire Application Process & Appeals Applicants that meet minimum qualifications will be included in a Comparative Analysis process that may include suitability screening, eSkills assessment, oral assessment, written performance assessment, or review by a Subject Matter Expert. Failure to provide adequate information or follow instructions by the closing date may result in elimination from consideration. Employees who are rehired or reinstated within six months of separation will return at either their previous pay rate or based on time in the class series, whichever is higher. Those rehired or reinstated after six months will use the same formula for new hires and promotions.
