Naturalist - USCG Master, 25+ tons

WHO WE ARE Lindblad Expeditions is a true pioneer in Expedition Travel. SUMMARY This position supports the expedition as the expert and specialist in natural history for particular regions around the world. The naturalist will work with the rest of the field staff in the delivery of the itinerary on a daily basis. The role involves contract periods of a minimum 3‑5 weeks at a time with varying hours each day. The naturalist is responsible for creating and presenting engaging presentations, recaps, and in‑the‑field interpretation. Excellent social skills are essential for dining with guests and working in a multi‑national environment while living in close quarters. NOTE The naturalist position requires a USCG Master, 25+ GRT. Applicants who do not meet this requirement should not apply. SPECIFIC SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTISE REQUIRED Current USCG Master, 25+ GRT Experience in Alaska preferred Creatively engage with guests and share knowledge in personable, comfortable ways that inspire continued learning opportunities and discussion DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS In‑depth natural history knowledge of destination Intuitive focus on customer service and enhancing the guest experience Adaptable to diverse geographic regions Previous experience guiding or working in destination Team‑player with excellent training skills and proven educator Works well independently and is a self‑starter Strong communicator with individuals and groups; even‑tempered demeanor; can remain calm under pressure Able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with keen attention to detail Bachelor’s degree or four years of related work experience ESSENTIAL DUTIES Lead engaging walks and offer relevant field interpretation throughout the voyage Participate in evening recaps to highlight guests’ daily experiences Prepare several 30–40 minute PowerPoint or similar presentations with themes of the voyage Write the Daily Expedition Report one or more times during the voyage to encapsulate guests’ daily experiences Respond to requests promptly and remain highly visible to guests throughout the voyage Accompany guests ashore with local guides and represent National Geographic‑Lindblad Expeditions Possess strong public‑speaking skills Consistently represent Lindblad Expeditions with integrity and professionalism Eat meals with guests and make an effort to dine with a variety of people each voyage OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES Promotion/Sales: Familiar with company philosophy and programs; able to field guests’ questions about offerings Conservation/Sustainability: Familiar with Lindblad Expeditions‑National Geographic’s programs and able to discuss efforts where scheduled Zodiac Operations: Prepared to assist with many aspects of Zodiac operations for shore excursions; familiarity with Zodiacs and ability to drive is a strong preference, but not required Safety: Participate in on‑board safety training, meetings, and drills; also participate in shore‑based training as required; very familiar with the Field Staff Handbook COMPENSATION Daily rate: $310 per day. Travel expenses paid. COMMUNICATION SKILLS The naturalist must read, write, and comprehend policies, legal guidelines, correspondence, and memos in English, and communicate effectively in writing and orally with a professional demeanor. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Frequent sitting, talking, hearing, writing, typing. Occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
