Growth Lab Reporter

Full-time
Northwest Arkansas is thriving. It’s home to three Fortune 500 companies, the state’s flagship university, a flourishing outdoor recreation scene and a world-class art museum. Outsiders have noticed and they’re moving here at a rate of more than 30 per day. This level of population growth is expected to continue for years to come. The impacts of this rapid growth are many and varied. We’re seeking an ambitious, community-minded reporter who has the drive to uncover and explore the effects of growth on Northwest Arkansas and is able to explain to residents clearly and concisely why these things matter. The successful candidate will be part of the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s Growth Lab, producing rigorous, data-driven reporting and human-centered storytelling that examines how economic development, migration, housing, transportation and workforce trends intersect to reshape our region. The Growth Lab reporter will not only report and produce authoritative journalism for the community but will engage newcomers and longtime residents through community events, listening sessions and panel discussions. Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. • Demonstrated reporting experience, preferably covering local government, business, development or growth-related issues. • Strong writing, interviewing and storytelling skills. • Ability to analyze public records, budgets, planning documents and data. • Strong news judgment and the ability to manage multiple deadlines. • Commitment to fairness, accuracy and ethical journalism. • Experience with digital storytelling, social media and audience engagement is a plus. Position works from our Fayetteville and Bentonville offices. Work schedule includes nights and occasional weekend duty. Applicants must have a good driving record, a valid driver’s license and their own means of transportation. The benefits package includes paid vacation, holidays, sick leave, personal days, and parental leave to support a healthy work-life balance. Health, dental, vision, and additional insurance coverage are provided, along with long-term disability insurance and retirement plans. Employees have access to an Employee Assistance Program and behavioral health support, offering confidential resources for personal and professional challenges. This is a safety-sensitive position. Candidate must pass drug screening and background checks. We are an equal opportunity organization and do not discriminate on the basis of race, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, protected veteran status, disability, age, or any other legally protected status.
