Security Officer (B)

Summary Patrol assigned schools; performs security inspections; investigates and responds to security incidents; assists with the application of a school security plan. Qualifications High‑school education or GED. At least one year of experience in a security‑related field. Advanced degree(s) in a relevant field may be considered for some experience. Must successfully complete compulsory certification training approved by the Virginia Center for School Safety within sixty days of hire and recertify annually. Valid motor vehicle operator’s license with a good driving record. Minimum age of 21 at the time of appointment. May be required to work evenings, holidays, and weekends. Knowledge of standard security procedures and the regulations and laws relating to grounds and building intrusion and trespassing. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact professionally with students, staff, and the public. Judgment and decision‑making under stressful and dangerous conditions. Effective oral and written communication skills. Major Duties / Essential Functions Operate a School Board motor vehicle and patrol assigned schools to detect and deter fire, theft, vandalism, and other unauthorized activities that could endanger students, personnel, and property of Fairfax County Public Schools. Perform security inspections of schools, including manual checks of all exterior doors and windows. Assist administrators with applying the school security plan and other security‑related matters. Promptly report suspicious activities or person(s) to school officials and police when appropriate. Report to the security operations center and confirm that persons on FCPS property after school or normal working hours have proper authorization. Remove unauthorized persons from school premises and cooperate with fire and police personnel responding to alarms. Complete and submit all required reports and forms promptly. Assist custodians and staff with SAFAS problems. Perform minor maintenance repairs after hours. Provide backup to security system monitors and dispatch mobile units as needed. Maintain compliance with the Code of Virginia, the Virginia Administrative Code, and current certification requirements. Perform other related duties as required or assigned. Work Environment and Physical Requirements This job frequently operates outdoors in street environments near moving traffic. It requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity. The employee may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel. Exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises may occur. The job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 50 lbs.
