JVM Solutions is hiring an experienced Phlebotomists at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, Texas. This role serves as a full-time position within the inpatient and the outpatient clinic. The ideal candidate performs with precision and compassion under the demands of a fast-paced federal healthcare environment, including high daily draw volumes, complex patient populations, and strict compliance with VA patient safety and privacy standards.

Duties And Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and specimen collection on inpatients and outpatients independently, drawing blood from 40 to 80 patients per day with a minimum of 20% difficult/hard stick draws on patients with challenging venous access, including geriatric, spinal cord, and oncology patients
- Assemble and maintain all required equipment - tourniquets, needles, blood collection devices, vacuum tubes, gauze, alcohol, and chloral prep - on work tray, cart, or work area prior to and during collections
- Verify patient identity using two approved patient identifiers before every draw, in accordance with Medical Center Policy, Specimen Collection Policy, and The Joint Commission guidelines
- Draw blood and blood cultures using proper venipuncture techniques; utilize plastic vacuum tubes, standard needles, and butterfly blood collection sets as appropriate
- Label all specimens in the presence of the patient, initial, and transport collected blood to the processing area using the Trans Logic pneumatic tube system
- Ensure sufficient blood volume is collected for each requested test or procedure; perform outpatient collections including urine collections and glucose tolerance testing in addition to blood draws
- Perform technical support tasks including computer test accessioning, specimen centrifugation, and serum separation as needed; interpret and enter physician orders into the VA computer system
- Maintain complete and accurate records in the VA computer system for all patient specimen collections; uphold the highest standards of patient privacy and confidentiality at all times
- Report all patient safety incidents and on-the-job injuries to the onsite contract manager/VA supervisor within 15 minutes of occurrence
- Observe and comply with all OSHA regulations, VA/MEDVAMC safety policies, infection control standards, and personal protective equipment requirements
- Complete all mandatory VA-required training including HIPAA, Privacy and Confidentiality, safety training, and annual VAMC-required coursework by established deadlines
- Adhere to MEDVAMC dress code (scrubs required) and conduct all interactions in accordance with MEDVAMC policies on Interpersonal Behavior, Communication, and Customer Service
Qualifications
- Minimum of two (2) years of phlebotomy work experience, performed within the last three (3) years - inpatient and outpatient experience
- Must meet at least one of the following credential criteria: (1) recent graduate of an accredited phlebotomy program, (2) holder of a valid phlebotomy certificate, or (3) minimum two years of recent phlebotomy experience as described above
- Demonstrated competency performing high-volume, independent blood draws including difficult venous access on geriatric, oncology, and complex patient populations
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; must be maintained throughout the duration of the assignment
- Must be able to successfully complete a federal background investigation and VA credentialing/PIV process prior to beginning work
- Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position including prolonged standing and walking (46 hours per shift), pushing (24 hours), heavy lifting and carrying of 25 pounds or more, and bilateral hand use
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
