Mohs Surgical Medical Assistant

The Mohs MA is a more specialized surgical MA. In addition to many general dermatology MA responsibilities, they support the complete Mohs surgery process.

Preoperative responsibilities

• Review the Mohs schedule and patient charts. 
• Confirm biopsy site and pathology. 
• Confirm surgical site with the patient and surgeon. 
• Review medications, allergies, anticoagulants, pacemakers/implanted devices, and relevant medical history and vitals
• Take preoperative photographs. 
• Prepare the surgical room and sterile field. 
• Set up instruments, supplies, sutures, dressings, and medications. 
• Assist with surgical timeout/site verification procedures. 

During Mohs surgery

• Assist the surgeon during removal of each Mohs layer. 
• Maintain clean technique for stages
• Pass instruments and supplies. 
• Assist with electrocautery and bleeding control as directed. 
• Prepare the patient between Mohs stages. 
• Monitor the patient while awaiting pathology results. 
• Assist with subsequent stages when additional tissue removal is required. 
• Take photos each stage, before/after

Reconstruction/closure

• Prepare the sterile field for reconstruction. 
• Assist with:
  • Simple closures 
  • Complex layered closures 
  • Flaps 
  • Grafts 
• Prepare sutures and instruments. 
• Dress the Wound
• Take postoperative photographs 

Postoperative care

• Review provider-approved postoperative and wound-care instructions. 
• Answer postoperative questions within MA scope and escalate clinical concerns. 
• Assist with wound checks and dressing changes. 
• Monitor documentation for postoperative complications and notify the provider. 
• See suture removals and wound checks

Surgical operations responsibilities

• Sterilize/process instruments according to practice policy. 
• Maintain surgical instruments and equipment. 
• Complete biological/chemical sterilization monitoring documentation as applicable. 
• Maintain surgical supplies and inventory. 
• Ensure emergency equipment and supplies are available. 
• Maintain OSHA and infection-control compliance. 
• Assist with surgical logs, specimen logs, and quality-control documentation.

Scribe & Clinical Documentation Required throughout all Phases of Visit

· Provide real-time scribing support during patient visits, accurately documenting the provider-patient encounter in the electronic medical record (EMR).
