Economist/Sr. Economist (Environmental) - STARE

Job Overview The Real Sector Division of the Statistics Department (STARE) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) leads global macroeconomic statistical methodologies and standards for the IMF, its member countries, and the international statistical community. STARE supports IMF surveillance and lending operations by strengthening member countries’ capabilities to produce and disseminate macroeconomic and financial statistics for sound policymaking, and is launching a program to develop climate change and related environmental statistics. Position Economist / Senior Economist – 3‑year term, subject to Review Committee/Senior Review Committee approval, hiring for grades A11, A12, A13, A14. Responsibilities Contribute to the development of frameworks that integrate economic, financial, and environmental‑related statistics. Deliver capacity‑development technical assistance and training to member countries to strengthen production of environmental‑economics data and indicators supporting country policymaking and IMF surveillance. Update conceptual standards and develop a forward‑looking research agenda to create new data at the intersection of the economy and environment. Potential work areas include: developing economic activity indicators such as air emissions and energy accounts, climate mitigation and adaptation expenditures, and related work tied to the System of Environmental Economic Accounting Central Framework (SEEA‑CF) and Experimental Ecosystem Accounting; measuring new national accounts data on environmental‑related assets (e.g., natural resource and biological assets, resource rents, depletion, carbon pricing and sequestration services); cross‑border related indicators such as CO₂ emissions embodied in trade and emissions from the production and investment of domestic and multinational enterprises; and forward‑looking physical risk indicators based on climate scenarios. Qualifications Dynamic, highly motivated economist able to work independently and in teams. Proven experience developing environmental‑economic statistics (e.g., SEEA‑CF, climate indicators) and integrating them into macroeconomic frameworks such as national accounts, balance of payments, or government finance statistics. Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in economics, statistics or related environment‑economics field with a strong grounding in quantitative analysis. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; working knowledge of French or Spanish is an additional asset. Strong relationship‑management, negotiation, influencing skills, and ability to build relations with national and international authorities. Strong drive for results with ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines. Proficiency in open‑source software languages (R, Python, or similar) for handling large complex datasets; expertise would be ideal.
