Pratt & Whitney is seeking a Senior Principal Transmissions Engineer to join the Mechanical Systems, Externals, and Nacelles (MSEN) Engineering Transmissions team. The role involves design, analysis, and integration of mechanical systems hardware for advanced engine programs, with emphasis on collaboration, mentorship, and leadership across cross-functional teams. What You Will Do Technical Leadership & Presentation: Lead multidisciplinary teams to tackle MSEN transmissions identified technical issues and integrate gearbox designs, presenting key results to customers and executive leadership. Gear Design & Analysis: Perform comprehensive design and analysis on aerospace hardware across spur, helical, bevel, and spiral bevel gears using automated tools, FEA, and hand calculations. Root Cause Investigation (RRCA): Lead transmission root cause investigation teams—directing work, assigning/closing action items, and delivering findings to engineering leadership. Mentorship & Peer Review: Review team members' work and provide hands-on guidance to accelerate proficiency of less experienced engineers. Supplier Requirement Integration: Manage and integrate complex technical requirements of external suppliers with design ownership. Full-Lifecycle Testing: Lead test programs including rig development, test plan creation, instrumentation/limit selection, pre-test predictions, data post-processing, and reporting. Continuous Improvement & Manufacturing: Advance gear manufacturing readiness (hobbing, shaping, broaching, milling, heat treating, superfinishing) and improve ESW/EKS, analytical tools, and training materials. Travel Requirement: 10% (Domestic and International). Qualifications You Must Have A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field with 10 years of gear design and analysis experience, or an Advanced degree with 7 years of gear design and analysis experience. At least 3 years of direct experience working with complex Mechanical Systems hardware with proven expertise in industry-standard tools for gear design and manufacturing. Qualifications We Prefer Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or actively pursuing an Advanced degree in a related field. An active U.S. Security Clearance. Department/Segment Overview Mechanical Systems, Externals, and Nacelles Engineering (MSEN) : MSEN is responsible for the design, development and in-service support of power transmission systems, bearing compartment and rotor support design and analysis, oil and thermal management systems, engine externals packaging and architecture, as well as nacelles for commercial and military engine models. Technical disciplines include Project Engineering, Mechanical Design, Structural Analysis, Product Definition, System Modeling, Mechanical Design analysis for bearings, gears and seals, and fluid-thermal modeling of associated components and systems. The salary range for this role is 132,400 USD - 251,600 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
