Job Title: Registered Nurse

License: Current licensure in the state of employment

Must-Have: Required skills include nursing care, medication administration, patient assessment, supervisory techniques, and emergency procedures.

Description:
The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care, including executing orders from Licensed Independent Providers.
Dispenses and administers medications and assists Licensed Independent Providers in examinations and treatment.
Applies nursing and supervisory techniques in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents.
Performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure.
Attends sick calls with the physician to see inmates/residents.
Prepares a list of inmates/residents to be examined.
Prepares examining room and equipment as necessary.
Operates pill call, dispenses medications, and documents as required.
Calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders or in emergencies.
Examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries and those who become ill or injured.
Refers inmates/residents to emergency rooms or other healthcare facilities as needed.
Performs emergency procedures and notifies Licensed Independent Providers for treatment orders.
Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel.
Monitors inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate.
Provides guidance and supervision to nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
Maintains good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies.
Utilizes established policies and procedures in decision-making but employs sound independent judgment.
Regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of services.
Maintains the security and confidentiality of all medical records.
Assists with the review of medical files to ensure all services are documented.
Closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses.
Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary.
Complies with all applicable pharmacy laws.
Observes and records inmate/resident behavior.
Inspects the medical unit for items that could be contraband.
Secures or safely disposes of supplies and equipment as necessary.
Provides health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis as required.
Assists with preparing and maintaining various records, reports, and logs.
Reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical procedures and documents.
Reviews, processes, and responds to lawsuits and attends court hearings when necessary.
Facilitates accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency and approved medical services.
Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required and takes appropriate action in emergencies.
