Assesses, designs, implements, and provides instructional design support for in one or more units to develop resources and materials to support teaching and learning.

Job Description:

The Instructional Designer within ASU’s Learning Enterprise Learning Design team designs and develops innovative, scalable learning experiences that support a population of learners across career advancement, workforce development, and academic pathways.

Instructional Designers collaborate with faculty, subject matter experts, product teams, and industry partners to design high-quality learning experiences delivered through a variety of platforms and modalities, including online asynchronous and synchronous immersion classes. These offerings may include Universal Learner Courses, Career and Professional Learning programs, executive education, and other learning innovations that expand access to education and career opportunity.

In this role, the Instructional Designer applies evidence-based learning science, modern pedagogical practices, and emerging educational technologies to design engaging and effective learning experiences. Designers are expected to leverage tools such as Canvas and modern authoring platforms, while also integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and automation tools into the course design and development process in ways that enhance learner experience and instructional efficiency.

Instructional Designers are assigned to projects across the Learning Design portfolio and work collaboratively within cross-functional teams to design, develop, launch, and continuously improve learning experiences at scale.

The successful candidate will design courses for asynchronous online learners and synchronous immersion learners and contribute to the ongoing improvement of design frameworks, templates, and processes. Designers will also use learner data, engagement metrics, and feedback to inform course revisions and continuous improvement.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position. This is an at-will position. As an at-will employee, you and ASU are entitled to terminate the employment relationship at any time and for any reason except an unlawful one.

This position is subject to grant funding or other special funding and the position may terminate when funding is no longer available.

This role is based at ASU’s Tempe campus. A fingerprint background check is a mandatory step in the hiring process. ASU will not sponsor this position; the applicant must be eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Position Salary Range: $60,000-$63,000 per year, depending on experience

Essential Duties:

By the end of the first year in the position, the Instructional Designer will contribute to the Learning Design team in the following ways:

Design and Develop Scalable Learning Experiences

The Instructional Designer will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to design high-quality courses and learning experiences that support learner populations in asynchronous and synchronous modalities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Partner with faculty, subject matter experts, and internal stakeholders to design innovative and effective learning experiences for higher education, career learning and executive education.

  • Apply backward design to align learning objectives, instructional materials, and assessments.

  • Design courses and learning assets using evidence-based learning science and modern instructional design frameworks.

  • Develop course materials and activities in the learning management system (LMS), including Canvas and other learning platforms.

  • Build and integrate multimedia learning assets using rapid authoring tools such as Articulate Rise, Storyline, H5P, and other learning technologies.

  • Ensure course materials meet accessibility and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) standards.

  • Design assessments and learning activities that support skill development and authentic learning outcomes.

  • Collaborate with multimedia specialists, instructional technologists, and course managers to ensure high-quality course delivery.

Leverage AI and Emerging Technologies in Course Design

Instructional Designers will leverage emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to enhance course development and learner experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Integrate AI-enabled tools into course design and development workflows.

  • Explore AI-supported learning experiences such as automated feedback, adaptive content, and scalable assessment strategies.

  • Evaluate emerging learning technologies and recommend their application in course development.

  • Apply responsible and ethical AI practices aligned with ASU’s Principled Innovation framework.

  • Support experimentation and pilot initiatives involving new educational technologies.

Support Portfolio-Wide Course Development and Continuous Improvement

Instructional Designers support projects across the Learning Design portfolio and contribute to the sustainability and scalability of the learning catalog.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design and develop courses across multiple program areas including Universal Learner Courses, Career and Professional Learning, and Learning Innovations initiatives.

  • Maintain and update existing courses within the portfolio to ensure relevance, quality, and alignment with evolving learner needs.

  • Review courses against established Learning Design principles and quality standards.

  • Use learner engagement and success data to inform course revisions and improvements.

  • Support course launch readiness through quality assurance (QA) review and pre-launch preparation.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure consistent course design standards across offerings.

Collaboration and Professional Contribution

Instructional Designers contribute to the culture and continuous improvement of the Learning Design team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with instructional designers, online course managers, faculty experts, product teams, and technology specialists.

  • Participate in design reviews, portfolio discussions, and team working sessions.

  • Share best practices and innovations in instructional design with the Learning Design team.

  • Remain current with emerging research and trends in instructional design, learning science, and educational technology.

  • Contribute to internal knowledge sharing through workshops, documentation, and team presentations.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience designing and developing asynchronous online courses and synchronous immersion experiences.

  • Demonstrated experience applying instructional design methodologies such as backward design and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

  • Experience using learning technologies such as Canvas, Articulate Rise, Storyline, H5P, or similar rapid authoring tools.

  • Experience collaborating with faculty, subject matter experts, and interdisciplinary project teams.

  • Experience integrating multimedia, interactive learning elements, and technology-enhanced learning strategies.

  • Experience applying data-informed approaches to course design and continuous improvement.

  • Experience working with or evaluating artificial intelligence tools in instructional design workflows.

  • Familiarity with accessibility standards such as WCAG.

  • Experience designing learning experiences that support workforce development, professional learning, and executive education, including synchronous or immersion learning programs

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.

  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.

  • May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses.
