Certified Surgical First Assistant – Cardiovascular Operating Room – St. Francis Downtown Job Summary Prepare the cardiac surgical room, gather patient and case‑specific supplies and equipment. Under the direct supervision of a surgeon, perform first, second or third assistant tasks during an intra‑operative procedure, including providing exposure, retracting to expose anatomy without undue pressure on organs and tissues, performing surgical wound repair techniques and controlling blood loss during cardiac surgery. May be called to perform duties in the main OR during normal working hours when not in conflict with cardiovascular OR responsibilities. Essential Functions Serve as the surgical assistant on assigned cardiac surgery cases and function in the scrub role as assigned. Under direct supervision of the operating surgeon, handle tissue, provide exposure, use instruments and sutures, provide hemostasis, perform wound closure and knot tying, irrigate wound site, and use power equipment and stapling devices. Perform surgical hand scrub, following the Surgical Scrub Policy and Procedure, gown and glove, following gowning and gloving policy and procedure. Assist the surgeon or scrub person in draping the patient to establish the sterile field in accordance with AORN standards and departmental policies. Assist scrub personnel and surgeon in applying dressings as requested. Share responsibility for patient safety, maintaining an environment free of obstacles and hazards that could result in injury. Education High school diploma or equivalent (required) Completion of a Surgical Assistant Program (required) Required Licensing & Certifications BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (preferred upon hire) Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) – NBSTSA, NSAA, or NCCSA (required). Preferred if hired in Virginia before July 1, 2020, or in Cincinnati.
