Job Description

The Boston Globe newsroom is hiring an editorial director for its Globe-branded newsletters and email products. We’re looking for someone with a wealth of energy and ideas, and deep experience in writing, editing, and content strategy who can elevate one of our most important channels for connecting with readers.

The director will oversee the Boston Globe-branded newsletter and email portfolio, current as well as future. These cover a broad swath of topics, from immigration to sports, and represent a substantial portion of our overall subscriber readership.

Responsibilities

Because of the wide range of topics and opportunities, we are looking for a seasoned editor with extensive knowledge of the newsletter space. They should be able to establish an editorial vision and identify target audiences to match the personalized form of a newsletter. Additionally, they should be capable of working with writers to help craft a voice and tone to match a newsletter’s goal and purpose.

They should also possess a solid understanding of reader analytics and the operational aspects of publishing a newsletter. They should be adept at establishing KPIs for success and working to refine and grow audiences. Furthermore, they should understand product lifecycles and be comfortable working with designers to continuously enhance and improve the look, functionality, and performance of our newsletters.

Finally, the director needs to be able to work collaboratively with stakeholders across a broad organization, both inside and outside of the newsroom. This leader is accountable for the journalistic quality, voice, tone, and reader experience of Globe newsroom emails and newsletters. They partner closely with cross-functional teams to bring that vision to life.

Qualifications

• At least 5-8 years of journalism experience as a reporter, editor, or producer. Needs to have excellent journalism skills, including writing, editing, and news judgment.
• Someone comfortable using a wide range of metrics to determine success, as well as crafting surveys and other forms of audience outreach to get constant reader feedback.
• Previous experience creating and launching a successful suite of editorial newsletters for a news organization.
• Comfortable collaborating with a varied group of journalists, and also colleagues in sales, marketing, product, innovation, and technology roles.
• Hands‑on skill with the operational aspects of creating and deploying newsletters. Prior knowledge of Mailchimp or Salesforce Marketing Cloud a plus.
• Comfortable setting an editorial vision and working with writers to achieve a specific tone, voice, and audience.
• Skilled at project management, multitasking, and lateral management of teams and initiatives.
• A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.

The annual salary for this role is $125,000 - $140,000.
