Registered Nurse

Registered nurses (RNs) work to promote good health and prevent illness. They provide professional nursing care to acutely ill, convalescing, and chronically ill patients as directed by the Medical Staff. Many registered nurses focus on the overall care of patients in a medical-surgical setting. They administer medications under the supervision of doctors and keep records of symptoms and progress. Medical-Surgical nurses also supervise licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants, and nursing students. Essential job duties include assessing patients and performing patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for the patient's age and diagnosis. They communicate with providers and care team members regarding changes in the patient's clinical condition, including results of diagnostic studies and symptomology. Responding quickly and accurately to changes in patient condition or response to treatment is crucial. General nursing duties are performed across all departments with adequate supervision. Following the Five Medication Rights helps reduce the potential for medication errors. Nurses formulate a patient teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluate the effectiveness of learning, including family or caretaker involvement as appropriate. Interactions with patients, families, co-workers, and providers should be conducted with respect, dignity, and empathy. Nurses identify and address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families or caretakers. Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span is essential, as well as the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patient population served. Documentation of patient care must adhere to standards and policies. Participation in and support for orientation of personnel and all available in-services is expected. Other duties may be assigned as necessary. Holiday coverage is required.
