This role is for a developing mechanical professional with field experience who wants to learn how the work goes together, how it is priced, and how it is bought. Constructability, sequencing, trade coordination, and scope of work knowledge are at the core of this role, and you will grow them here.Supports HVAC, plumbing, process piping, fire protection, and building automation and controls packages, including data center cooling (chillers, air handlers, CRAH units, and liquid cooling), on large-scale Data Center, Industrial, Life Science, Commercial, and Institutional projects. Candidates must bring prior hands-on field experience and a working knowledge of how the work is built. Team members are expected to cross-train in other scopes so the team can flex as project needs shiftThe Specifics of the RoleDrawing Review and Scope SupportReview mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection drawings, equipment schedules, and specifications with the Procurement Lead and perform ductwork, piping, and equipment takeoffsDraft scopes of work, inclusions, exclusions, and trade responsibility matrices, including owner-furnished equipment, controls, startup, and test and balance responsibilitiesLog drawing conflicts and missing information, and prepare RFIs for resolution before bidConstructability and Coordination SupportSupport constructability and sequencing reviews; document rough-in sequence, equipment setting and rigging, prefabrication, and delivery assumptionsIdentify potential trade clashes and scope gaps (structural supports and dunnage, penetrations and firestopping, housekeeping pads, electrical connections, and controls interfaces) and bring them to the lead earlyPricing and Buyout SupportBuild labor and material pricing breakouts: major equipment, duct, pipe, and fittings, prefabrication, installation labor by system and area, rigging, startup, test and balance, and commissioning supportAssemble Cost Breakdown Structure (CBS) bid packages, issue invitations in BuildingConnected, manage bidder questions, and track coveragePrepare bid leveling sheets and gap analysis to support the Procurement Lead's negotiationCollect prequalification data (TradeTapp, licensing, safety records, and labor capacity) and support long-lead equipment procurement and releaseExecution SupportTrack RFIs, submittals, equipment releases, factory witness testing, and deliveries; flag slippage earlyReview payment applications and stored equipment backup for accuracyPrepare change event pricing comparisons and maintain cost tracking logsHelp maintain scope libraries, pricing templates, and lessons learnedCross-train across other scopes to build breadth and support the team where volume is heaviestRequirements2 to 5 years of experience in construction procurement, estimating, project engineering, or mechanical contractingHands-on field experience required, such as field engineer, on-site project engineer, or construction internshipAbility to read mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection drawings, equipment schedules, and specifications, and perform quantity takeoffsWorking understanding of HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems, installation sequencing, and startup and commissioningStrong Excel skills; Bluebeam, BuildingConnected, and Procore experience a plusOrganized, detail-oriented, and eager to learn, with clear written and verbal communicationBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred; equivalent field experience considered.Some Things You Should KnowNo other builder can offer the collaborative design-build approach that Clayco does.We work on creative, complex, award-winning, high-profile jobs.The pace is fast!This position is classified as a safety-sensitive role in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.
