Computational Biologist

Overview The Dana‑Farber Cancer Institute seeks a Computational Biologist in the Van Allen lab. The candidate will develop and support thyroid cancer data processing and analysis tools, create new algorithms for bulk, single‑cell, and spatial tumor analysis, and maintain datasets and databases for precision cancer medicine. Responsibilities Prospective clinical sequencing to guide cancer patient care. Studies of resistance to existing and emerging therapies using patient‑derived data. Studies of patient samples for tumor behavior and clinical outcomes. Studies of cancer immunotherapies to develop predictors of response. Collaborate with the Dana‑Farber Cancer Institute, the Broad Institute, and other institutions. Analyze sequencing data to determine effects of genomic alterations and expression changes on clinical behavior, both retrospectively and prospectively. Help identify novel approaches for personalized care in oncology and support new methods in clinical decision‑making, biomarker development, and tumor biology. Design and implement algorithms to analyze data and integrate with other datasets, including clinical outcomes data. Generate tools for manipulating and preparing data for display, transfer to external collaborators, and maintain, support, and document shared tools, code base, and datasets. Participate in software infrastructure evolution, providing diverse opportunities from software design to predictive modeling. Minimum Job Qualifications B.S. or M.S. in bioinformatics, mathematics, physics, computer science, or equivalent research experience, with significant experience in computer programming and computational biology. Strong background in statistics and biology; experience managing and curating large datasets and with machine learning techniques is desired. Prior experience in thyroid cancer biology and computational analysis is strongly desired. Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to conduct self‑directed and guided research. Outstanding personal initiative and effective teamwork. Ability to meet deadlines and multitask efficiently. Ability to collaborate across individuals with differing comfort toward computational biology, including strong written communication. Willingness to seek mentorship and provide mentorship to others in the community. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thyroid cancer biology background. Experience in Python and/or R preferred. Experience with cloud computing. Experience with thyroid cancer datasets. Willingness to learn new languages and tools. Supervisory Responsibilities This position includes co‑mentoring of students and faculty and offers growth in developing interdisciplinary, project‑oriented teams.
