Head Lifeguard

The Head Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas, and creating a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures and providing front line monitoring of the lifeguard staff.

Essential functions include assisting in all daily operations as directed by Director of Aquatics Safety, conducting and ensuring proper maintenance of pools, maintaining accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance, assisting Director of Aquatics Safety with all In-Service Trainings, maintaining constant surveillance of the pool area, holding staff responsible and accountable for all actions, knowing/reviewing all emergency procedures and responding to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures, maintaining effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff, knowing, understanding, and consistently applying safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area, maintaining accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the county Health Department code, performing equipment checks and ensuring appropriate equipment is available as needed, performing chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, taking appropriate action if adjustments are needed, attending all staff meetings and In-Service trainings as required, providing excellent service to members, guests, and program participants in the Y, handling and resolving membership concerns and informing supervisor of unusual situations or unresolved issues, being available during the week and weekends, helping to ensure all shifts are covered as need, and assisting supervisor with training of new staff on YMCA Aquatic policies and procedures.

Qualifications include minimum age of 18, certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard or YMCA Lifeguard, YMCA V6 Swim Instructor, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification, certified Pool Operators Certification (CPO) and Lifeguard Safety Instructor (LGI) highly recommended or preferred, ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness, and must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

Physical demands include ability to pass lifeguard water test, ability to remain alert, ability to sit or stand for extended periods, adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals, ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision, ability to work in extreme to moderate weather conditions, ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue, ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.

YMCA safety requirements include CPR & First Aid, emergency response, incident management, safe environment, physical readiness, and compliance.
