Job Summary and Qualifications The Director of Nursing for Nursing Administration has overall accountability for the following areas: Emergency Department Float Pool, Central Staffing Office and other clinical services as well as Patient Safety, Nursing Process Improvement and Staffing Effectiveness. The Director of Nursing for Nursing Administration has the responsibility to coordinate and facilitate action steps needed to resolve clinical issues and attain expected outcomes. The Director of Nursing coordinates the needs of the Nursing Administrative office through budget planning and overall supervision of practice and administrative issues. Recognizes that variables such as age, race, nationality, culture, disease-causing vulnerabilities, and socioeconomic factors affect the patient populations under their care as defined in the unit’s provision of care statement. Uses interventions appropriate to these factors (e.g. interpreter, dietary preferences, social service consult, etc.). General Responsibilities Patient Care Actively participates in administering patient care and management of related service. Coordinates the admission, discharge and transfer of patients in collaboration with other team leaders. Assists families and patients by teaching the skills and information necessary for successful post-discharge care, incorporating age-specific criteria and assessment of readiness to learn. Assures that patient equipment and supplies are available and in working order. Participates in performance improvement activities such as patient satisfaction, physician satisfaction, and staff satisfaction performing surveys as necessary. Identifies and implements corrective actions as necessary. Monitors annual quality indicators for compliance to standards. Applies the knowledge of growth and development to appropriate patient populations. Maintains personal responsibility for professional growth and development. Ensures the provision of a safe and comforting environment. Maintains patient confidentiality. Maintains universal precautions. Performs Point of Care procedures in a timely manner according to established policy and procedure. Documents required information and complies with all Point of Care quality control standards. Oversees the operations of departments in accordance with hospital and nursing department philosophy, policies, procedures, protocols, and standards: Develops and implements organizational plans so that communication is facilitated, and functional responsibilities and lines of authority are maintained. Promotes cooperation/collaboration with other departments, medical staff, auxiliary, and community agencies to facilitate optimum patient care. Analyzes problems and makes recommendations to the CNO on current issues, services and programs n as necessary. Provides support to the CNO as designated, may include coverage at meetings as requested by CNO. Maintains current knowledge of Federal regulations and other Regulatory requirements. Review and monitor physician, patient, and employee satisfaction surveys. In collaboration with Manager, develop and implement action plans to address variances. Attends pertinent meetings. Assures the acquisition and retention of qualified staff: Adheres to personnel policies in the recruiting, hiring, directing, and counseling of staff. Facilitates appropriate action through the effective use of decision-making, communication, and human development techniques. Plans and participates in continuing education and development of employees. Communicates with the Department Directors, Resource Nurses, and CNO regarding significant unit or personnel problems. Assists the hospital educator with training. Develops a professional climate within the nursing units: Identifies learning needs of staff members, and in collaboration with Nursing Practice Educations and Research, develops plan to meet educational needs. Assists the Department Directors with Performance Improvement activities. Develops policies and procedures as appropriate. Serves on committees and task forces as is necessary to facilitate inter departmental communication and operations. Maintains current policy, procedure, and regulatory manuals. Attends professional meetings, workshops or seminars. Attends/Facilitates Nursing Leadership meetings. Responsible for performance improvement activities and coordination of regulatory compliance for the Department of Nursing: Recommends actions to improve related measurement and improvement activities. Develops plans collaboratively to ensure the coordination of efforts to measure, assess and recommend actions for improvement. Assists with JCAHO and Baldrige readiness. Completes special projects as assigned: Designs implementation plans for assigned projects. Coordinates the efforts of project team members. Anticipates delays and recommends alternative solutions. Maintains projects at or below projected budgets. Completes projects in a timely manner and analyzes results. Develops and monitors department budgets Prepares capital, personnel, revenue, and expense budgets annually. Approves payroll and reviews labor distribution on a monthly basis. In collaboration with Nurse Managers develop and implement strategies to control budgetary variances. Assures reporting departments adhere to budget projections by reviewing daily operating reports. Maintains productivity within acceptable benchmarks and provides budget variance information to CNO within a timely manner after receiving monthly financial statements. Education Required Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required, Master’s in Nursing or Business preferred Education preferred: Master’s degree in Nursing or Administration Licenses and Certifications Registered Nurse with current state licensure from a state within the Nursing Compact. Required Upon Hire Required within 60 days—if working under compact license, must have current state licensure within 60 days.
