Sr. Industrial Controls Panel Builder
Brock11 Consulting LLC
About the Opportunity
Brock11 Consulting is recruiting an accomplished Industrial Control Panel Builder V for a growing, Ohio-based industrial automation and systems integration organization. This is the highest technical level within the panel-building career path and is intended for a true subject matter expert who combines exceptional hands-on panel-building skill with technical leadership, project ownership, quality oversight, coaching, and continuous improvement.
This is a true start-to-finish industrial control-panel role. Candidates must be able to take a complete set of electrical blueprints/schematics and independently build a complex industrial control panel from an empty enclosure through completed assembly, wiring, troubleshooting, and readiness for inspection/testing. This is not printed circuit-board (PCB) assembly, electronics-board manufacturing, or bench-level soldering work.
What You Will Do
- Serve as a subject matter expert in all aspects of industrial control-panel construction and be a technical resource for panel builders across Levels I-IV.
- Independently build the most complex industrial control panels from scratch, start to finish, using electrical blueprints, schematics, panel layouts, bills of material, and engineering documentation.
- Review complete drawing packages, determine the appropriate build sequence, identify risks or discrepancies, and establish the approach for successful project execution.
- Lay out and mount electrical and automation components inside control enclosures, including measuring, drilling, cutting, and installation of DIN rail, wire duct, and related panel hardware.
- Complete and oversee point-to-point wiring, wire routing, termination, labeling, and identification of control and power circuits to a high standard of workmanship and accuracy.
- Work with industrial automation and control components that may include PLC hardware, HMIs, VFDs, power supplies, relays, breakers, disconnects, terminal blocks, motor-control components, and other industrial electrical hardware.
- Interpret complex electrical prints and wiring diagrams at an expert level and help resolve technical questions that are not readily answered by standard build documentation.
- Identify drawing discrepancies, component conflicts, missing information, or manufacturability concerns and partner with engineering to determine the appropriate resolution.
- Provide redlines, practical build feedback, and recommendations to engineering based on actual panel construction and recurring shop issues.
- Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for complex wiring, component, drawing, quality, or production problems.
- Provide technical oversight and support for the most complex projects, including helping Levels I-IV establish and successfully execute new or unfamiliar builds.
- Manage complex build schedules and project timelines and coordinate priorities, labor, materials, and dependencies to support on-time completion.
- Coordinate with engineering, purchasing, shipping, operations, customers, and vendors to resolve issues and keep projects moving.
- Participate in customer and vendor meetings when advanced panel-building expertise or project coordination is required.
- Support shipment coordination and other project logistics when they directly affect successful panel delivery.
- Help establish, reinforce, and improve panel-shop quality standards, inspection practices, and workmanship expectations.
- Serve as a key technical resource for applicable UL 508A panel-shop practices and support UL-related program requirements as assigned.
- Support calibration, shop-tool management, and other technical programs that help maintain consistency, quality, and compliance.
- Provide day-to-day technical leadership, coaching, mentoring, and training to panel builders and other shop personnel.
- Assist with onboarding and development of new employees and help strengthen the technical capability of the panel-building team.
- Provide constructive performance feedback and day-to-day personnel guidance when assigned leadership responsibility.
- Lead or support continuous-improvement initiatives related to workflow, quality, tooling, productivity, safety, standardization, and shop organization.
- Participate in evaluating tooling, equipment, and capital purchases and recommend investments that improve panel-building capability, quality, efficiency, or safety.
Required Experience and Skills
- Extensive hands-on experience building industrial electrical control panels, including demonstrated mastery of complex custom builds.
- Proven ability to take a complete set of electrical blueprints/schematics and independently build an industrial control panel from an empty enclosure through final completion.
- Expert-level ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and bills of material.
- Hands-on expertise with panel layout, component mounting, DIN rail, wire duct, drilling/cutting, wiring, termination, labeling, and troubleshooting.
- Deep working knowledge of industrial electrical components and control-system hardware.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize drawing or design issues, determine practical solutions, and communicate effectively with engineering.
- Experience leading the most complex panel-building projects and serving as a technical resource to other builders, electricians, or technicians.
- Demonstrated coaching, mentoring, training, or employee-development experience.
- Experience managing build schedules, project timelines, and cross-functional coordination.
- Ability to interact professionally with customers, suppliers, engineers, operations leaders, and company leadership.
- Strong quality-management mindset with advanced troubleshooting and root-cause problem-solving capability.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office tools for scheduling, communication, documentation, and project coordination.
- Ability to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and contribute to tooling, equipment, and capital-investment decisions.
Preferred Background
The strongest candidates are likely to have experience in one or more of the following environments:
- UL 508A industrial control-panel shops
- Industrial automation or systems-integration companies
- Custom machine builders or automated-equipment OEMs
- Industrial electrical/control-system fabrication
- Robotics or automated manufacturing-equipment companies
Advanced knowledge of UL 508A industrial control-panel requirements is strongly preferred. Experience supporting UL compliance, calibration programs, or shop-tool management is also valuable for this level.
Experience That Does Not Translate Directly
Printed circuit-board manufacturing, PCB assembly, electronic board soldering, or small-electronics assembly alone does not provide the type of panel-building experience required for this position. Experience limited to wiring preassembled panels or completing only one portion of a build is also not equivalent to the start-to-finish capability expected at Level V.
What Success Looks Like
A successful Level V Panel Builder is the person the team relies on when the project is new, highly complex, technically unclear, or at risk. You should be able to receive a set of prints, understand the complete build, identify problems before they become costly, determine the best path forward, construct the panel correctly, and help others do the same.
This is still a hands-on technical role. The distinction at Level V is that technical mastery is combined with broader ownership: developing people, strengthening quality, supporting customers and vendors, improving shop processes, and helping establish how complex panel work should be performed across the organization.
Physical / Work Environment Expectations
- Ability to perform hands-on electrical panel construction in a shop environment for extended periods.
- Ability to use common hand and power tools associated with industrial panel fabrication and wiring.
- Ability to work safely around electrical components, fabrication equipment, and material-handling activity.
- Ability to stand, bend, reach, and perform detailed wiring and assembly tasks throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and move components, tools, and materials consistent with the requirements of industrial panel construction.
