College Police Officer

Title: College Police Officer Department: Public Safety & Police Campus Location: Arnold/Main Campus Salary Range: $28.41-$35.51 per hour Work Mode: This position requires a full-time in-person presence on campus or at alternative locations. Hours Per Week: 40 Work Schedule: Position Type: Full-Time Staff, Non-Exempt Position Summary The Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) Certified Police Officer is tasked with protecting life and property at AACC. The Officer completes diligent vehicle and foot patrols of the campus parking lots, streets, and sports fields, campus buildings, classrooms, labs, offices, streets, fields, and parking lots, conduct criminal and traffic investigations, investigate crimes, write reports, interview and interrogate suspects, make full custody arrests, collect and preserve evidence, testify in court, maintain building security, enforce Criminal Law, Civil Law, Education Article, Maryland Traffic Law and Student Code of Conduct, train for active shooters, barricades, suicides and hostage situations, respond to despondent individuals, domestic violence incidents, Title IX and Cleary Act incidents. Officers interact with persons experiencing mental health crises and work toward resolutions. Officers provide First Aid, CPR, and Emergency Medical and Combat Care to the sick and injured, perform vehicle jump starts, and lockouts. Each officer must maintain updated and thorough knowledge of the laws and college policies. Officers must work in all weather/hazardous conditions. Officers patrol with a Community Policing attitude but maintain physical and mental readiness for traditional law enforcement. Officers act as Officer in Charge in the absence of the Shift Commander, directing and supervising staff. Firearms and defensive tactics proficiency are required. Officers inspect and maintain equipment and college police vehicles. Job Duties and Responsibilities The AACC Police Officer protects life and property for persons on the college campus. Conducts diligent vehicle patrols of the campus parking lots, streets, and sports fields; and foot patrols of campus buildings, classrooms, labs, offices, streets, fields, and parking lots. Enforce Criminal Law, Civil Law, Education Article, Maryland Traffic Law, and Student Code of Conduct. Conduct criminal and traffic investigations. Interview and interrogate suspects and make full custody arrests. They collect and preserve evidence. Firearms and defensive tactics proficiency are required. Officers must receive instruction and gain access to: MVA database, National Crime Information Center, Report Exec report software, Data tel Student database, J-Portal for warrant checks, E-Tickets for Maryland Traffic tickets, and Automated Crash Reporting System. Maintain building security by locking and unlocking campus property. Provide First Aid, CPR, Emergency Medical and Combat Casualty Care to the sick and injured. Provide jump starts, lockouts, tire changes, and assistance to pets or children locked in cars. Enforce the smoking policy, assist AA County police with traffic control and direction as needed, identify and contain Hazmat spills on or near campus, and provide traffic control for community functions held on campus. Interact with persons experiencing a Mental Health Crisis, and work toward a resolution. College Police Officers must present with a Community Policing attitude but maintain physical and mental readiness for traditional law enforcement. Firearms and defensive tactics proficiency are required. Train for and respond to despondent individuals, active shooters, barricades, and hostage situations. Each must maintain an updated and thorough knowledge of laws and college policies they enforce. Act as Officer in Charge in the absence of the Shift Commander. Direct and supervise staff in that case. Required Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED Maryland Police Training Commission Certification[MPTC] Minimum of two years of relevant experience Must be 21 years old. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Must pass Oral Interview. Must pass a polygraph, physical examination including a stress test, and a psychological evaluation. Must undergo an extensive background investigation and drug screen. Must possess a valid Maryland Driver's License and have a good driving record and be capable of operating a Public Safety Police vehicle during both day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic, and in unsafe road conditions such as fog, smoke, rain, ice. and snow. Must be able to operate and utilize various types of police equipment; must demonstrate proficiency in the use of a handgun, handcuffs, O.C. Spray, Expandable Baton, and any other equipment approved for use by the department. Must be capable of gathering information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of the victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants, and following this, be able to prepare investigative and other reports, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations. Must be able to work flexible rotating hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, college closings, and required overtime due to staffing shortages. Must be able to identify evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions and that indicate the presence of dangerous conditions. Maintenance of physical condition needed to effectively perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters to include emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging, and carrying people away from dangerous situations and securing and evacuating people from particular areas. Must be able to engage in police and public safety patrol functions that include such things as walking foot patrol and physically checking buildings, climbing flights of stairs, sitting or standing for long periods of time, physically push/pull large/heavy objects, and perform lifesaving procedures. Must successfully pass all mandatory annual in-service and retaining programs. This position has been designated as an essential employee because of its importance to the college. The employee is required to work 52 weeks a year except for earned annual and sick leave. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge, skills, and ability in tactics and weaponry. Trained in Active Shooter, breaching doors, tactical movement Experience in a higher education environment. Knowledge of Title IV, Clery Act, FERPA, and Violence Against Women Act. Advanced Medical Training. Familiarity with facilities and maintenance equipment and procedures. Knowledge, skills, and ability to educate the college community in crime prevention and self-defense. In the best interest of the College, only individuals who are residents of Maryland or one of the following states will be eligible for employment at the college: Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia or the District of Columbia.
