This position has been deemed critical by the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability Dean's Office and is exempt from the hiring pause.
This position is 50% FTE fixed-term for one year with the possibility of extension based on funding availability and programmatic need.
This position is based on Stanford's main campus with consideration given to the option for a hybrid work schedule (partially onsite and offsite), subject to operational need. Interested candidates must include a resume and cover letter to be considered for this position.

TheStanford Woods Institute for the Environmentworks to advance global sustainability through new knowledge and practical, fair solutions to pressing environmental challenges. As part of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the Woods Institute provides an interdisciplinary research hub for scholars from all seven schools at Stanford. Offering targeted research incentives as well as convening, education, and leadership programs, the Woods Institute supports faculty, researchers, and students as they investigate and advance solutions to critical climate, environment, and sustainability challenges. Working on campus and around the globe, the Woods Institute and its hosted centers and programs combine cutting edge scholarship, diverse partnerships, and deep engagement across sectors and disciplines to advance just, practical solutions for people and the planet.
TheStanford Center for Ocean Solutions(COS) catalyzes research innovation and action to improve the health of the oceans for the people who depend on them the most. COS capitalizes on Stanford's broad expertise in ocean science and in the many other disciplines crucial to developing ocean solutions including engineering, computer science, political science, design, and business. Our core team of researchers and fellows partner with other research institutions, national and international non-governmental organizations, businesses and governments, as well as established and emerging leaders in the data revolution.
The COS Communications Manager will play a pivotal role in supporting and enhancing all aspects of the Center's communications efforts. This role requires a strategic thinker with a passion for storytelling and the ability to craft compelling narratives across various platforms, including print, web, video, and social media. The Communications Manager will report to the Director and collaborate with COS leadership to develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy.
Your Responsibilities will include:
Communications strategy
Build upon our existing communications strategy, working with leadership to ensure consistent, cohesive messaging for the Center overall.
Identify target audiences that support the Center's strategic priorities and tailor messaging and communication activities accordingly.
Coordinate strategy and activities with communications colleagues at the Woods Institute for the Environment and Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.
Content creation
Identify and develop compelling content that elevates the Center's research and impact.
Produce a quarterly newsletter and craft weekly social media posts.
Maintain the Center for Ocean Solutions website and ensure project pages, event listings, and the publications directory remain up-to-date.
Digital engagement
Identify benchmarks and set engagement goals for social media and the website.
Analyze metrics to assess the effectiveness of communication priorities.
Program communications & stakeholder engagement
Work with leadership to assess communication needs for research proposals and special projects.
Estimate communications costs, draft concept notes, calculate timeframes, and project manage vendors to produce deliverables in support of special projects.
Collaborate with external partners to engage key audiences and ensure cohesive messaging ahead of major events, like United Nations conferences.
Support Center scholars attending major events with research briefs, talking points, postcards, and other collateral.

To be successful in this position, you will need:
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
Excellent written communication skills, reporting skills, and advanced skills in conceptual editing, copy editing, and proof reading.
Ability to work collaboratively with internal communications groups across campus.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with a variety of people.
Capacity to write and synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.

The expected pay range for this position is $118,806 to $134,486 per annum. The actual pay will be pro-rated based on the 50% FTE.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire . The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs. At Stanford University, base pay represents only one aspect of the comprehensive rewards package.
