Organization TEXAS HISTORICAL COMMISSION Primary Location Texas – Goliad Work Locations Presidio La Bahia, 217 Loop 71, Goliad 77963 Job Installation, Maintenance, and Repair Employee Status Regular Schedule Full time Travel 5 % of the time Salary (Pay Basis) $3,850.00 – $4,050.00 (Monthly) Number of Openings 1 Overtime Status Non-exempt Job Description JOB OBJECTIVE: Performs highly complex (senior-level) building maintenance, construction, and grounds work for the Presidio La Bahia State Historic Site. Duties include caring for and maintaining the grounds, structures, tools, and records, operating motorized equipment, requisitioning supplies, and maintaining an on-site maintenance workshop. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Act as a safety officer and first responder during site emergencies. Perform daily and seasonal groundskeeping work, such as mowing, edging, trimming hedges, and fertilizing. Manage site pest control, applying pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides with approved methods. Maintain equipment, tools, and groundskeeping machinery. Support historic site and bed & breakfast operations, including basic custodial and laundry work. Maintain state vehicles and schedule maintenance per warranty guide. Receive and schedule maintenance requests. Identify maintenance issues, develop plans, and communicate concerns to the site manager. Maintain records and prepare reports on work projects and repairs. Perform minor building maintenance such as changing light bulbs and repairing minor structural damage. Perform carpentry work on non-historic buildings and furnishings. Maintain and repair electrical outlets, switches, fixtures, and wiring. Perform painting, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and mechanical maintenance. Organize a clean and secure maintenance shop. Inspect and operate equipment according to safety guidelines. Assist visitors and handle occasional Point of Sale transactions. Participate in special event preparations such as setting up tables and signage. Attend safety and emergency preparedness meetings and provide training. Attend State Office of Risk Management training as necessary. Calculate material and labor costs and develop purchase estimates. Attend staff meetings and supervise volunteers and contractual workers. Collaborate with THC staff architects and provide required documentation. Train, lead, assign, and prioritize work as needed. Adhere to the work schedule and maintain regular attendance. Follow THC safety guidelines, procedures, and ethics requirements. NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Perform other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduated from a senior high school or equivalent. Minimum four years of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work. Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure. Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and ability to drive a state vehicle. Required to travel up to 10 % of the work period. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Vocational training in a designated trade. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of planting, trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns. Knowledge of fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. Knowledge of construction, repair, maintenance, and operation of buildings, equipment, and utility systems. Knowledge of building materials and fire and safety regulations. Effective verbal and written communication, human relations, and organizational skills. Skill in hand and power tools and equipment maintenance. Skill in groundskeeping and motorized equipment operation. Skill in providing customer service excellence. Ability to operate a personal computer with word processing, database, and spreadsheet software. Ability to follow instructions and interpret drawings and diagrams. Ability to work professionally with co-workers, supervisors, volunteers, and stakeholders. Ability to work in a self-motivated, cooperative decision-making setting. Ability to meet strict deadlines under pressure and maintain detail orientation. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Ability to maintain confidentiality. REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION, OR LICENSURE: Must obtain a valid Driver’s License and Defensive Driving Course to operate state vehicles. Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator License preferred. ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: The workplace is a historic site with outdoor exposure to varying temperatures, weather, dust, insects, and pollution. Work involves irregular hours, manual handling up to 50 pounds, heavy machinery, driving, and computer use. Journeys may be on uneven and unpaved surfaces.
