Extension Specialist in Equine Management Posting Summary The Rutgers New Brunswick Department of Animal Sciences invites qualified candidates to apply for a 12‑month tenured open‑rank faculty position in the Extension Specialist title series. The role builds on the Rutgers Equine Science Center, focusing on equine physiology and potentially using the horse as a model for understanding the human‑animal bond. Eligible candidates should have a background in equine science and management with research in horse–human interaction, behavior, welfare, nutrition, reproduction, exercise physiology, pasture and forage management and experience in extension outreach. Responsibilities Lead and expand targeted outreach initiatives, developing and delivering science‑based educational programs. Collaborate with stakeholders to address emerging challenges in equine management, including designing statewide workshops on physiology, nutrition, welfare, and pasture systems. Create decision‑support tools and resources for equine farm owners to improve environmental sustainability and economic viability. Translate research findings into practical applications for horse owners and industry professionals. Support data‑driven policy development by engaging with state agencies and industry groups. Develop an externally funded research program focused on the core disciplines of animal science in the specified areas. Contribute to the Animal Sciences teaching program by developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in equine physiology, health, behavior, and management. Supervise student‑led research projects and internships, integrating experiential learning opportunities such as field visits, hands‑on labs, and community‑based projects. Qualifications Doctorate in animal or equine science, or a related biological discipline. Minimum of six years of extension experience with a record of accomplishment (publications, grants, extension programming, etc.). Knowledge of cooperative extension principles, mission, and roles is desirable. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Research interests in behavior and welfare, horse–human interaction, nutrition, pasture and forage management, or other areas of equine physiology.
