Human Resources Manager

The Deamer Group is proud to partner with Black Women for Wellness in their search for a Human Resources Manager. This is a full-time opportunity located in Los Angeles, CA. Black Women for Wellness is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing policies and electing leaders who improve the health, well-being, and quality of life of Black women, girls, and gender expansive people.

Our work moves public policy forward, elects leaders who prioritize Black women's needs, shifts culture through media, and storytelling, and empowers community members to engage in the fight for equity and justice. Through organizing, advocacy, coalition building, and civic engagement, we are building political power that creates lasting systems change.

Position Summary

The Human Resources Manager is responsible for leading and managing the day-to-day human resources functions of Black Women for Wellness (BWW), helping to foster a supportive, equitable, and mission-aligned workplace where employees can thrive. This role serves as a trusted resource to staff and leadership, providing guidance and support across key areas including recruitment and onboarding, employee relations, performance management, benefits administration, policy development, compliance, and professional development.

Working closely with organizational leadership, the Human Resources Manager helps strengthen BWW's people practices, systems, and workplace culture while ensuring HR policies and procedures are applied consistently, thoughtfully, and in alignment with applicable employment laws and organizational values. The ideal candidate brings a people-centered and solutions-oriented approach to human resources, balancing the needs of employees with the operational needs of the organization while contributing to an inclusive, collaborative, and accountable workplace.

Responsibilities and Tasks
  • Manage day-to-day HR functions, ensuring practices, policies, and procedures to effectively support employees and organizational needs.
  • Coordinate payroll processing in partnership with finance, ensuring accurate and timely employee pay, deductions, and status changes, and serving as a resource for payroll-related employee questions.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential personnel files and HR records, and regularly review and recommend updates to HR policies, procedures, and handbook materials as organizational needs evolve.
  • Serve as a primary resource for employees and managers on HR policies, benefits, workplace expectations, and general personnel matters.
  • Manage the full recruitment process, from job postings and candidate screening through interviews, selection, offers, and pre-employment requirements, while strengthening strategies to attract diverse, mission-aligned talent.
  • Partner with hiring managers to develop and maintain clear, accurate, and equitable job descriptions.
  • Develop and facilitate a consistent, welcoming onboarding process that introduces new employees to BWW's mission, values, policies, and culture, and coordinate offboarding, including documentation, exit processes, and knowledge transfer.
  • Serve as a trusted resource on workplace concerns, employee relations, and conflict resolution, ensuring timely, fair, and consistent resolution of complaints and coordinating confidential workplace investigations when necessary.
  • Coach and advise managers on feedback, documentation, performance improvement, corrective action, and employee development.
  • Coordinate performance management processes, including goal setting, evaluations, development plans, and ongoing feedback.
  • Administer employee benefits, leave, and other HR programs, serving as liaison with external providers and ensuring employees receive accurate, timely information on options, eligibility, and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws by maintaining required records, monitoring practices for potential risks, and staying current on regulatory changes and HR best practices.
  • Partner with leadership to foster an inclusive, respectful, collaborative, and accountable workplace, and develop strategies that strengthen engagement, communication, morale, and retention.
  • Identify training and professional development needs, coordinate learning opportunities, and support managers in finding resources that strengthen individual and team performance.
  • Gather and assess employee feedback to identify workplace trends and opportunities for organizational improvement.
  • Align HR practices and priorities with BWW's strategic and operational goals, supporting leadership with workforce planning, position management, job classifications, and compensation reviews.
  • Track and analyze HR data and workforce trends, providing guidance and recommendations that balance employee needs, organizational priorities, risk, and BWW's values.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of BWW's mission and organizational goals.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, Public Administration, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible HR experience across multiple functions, including recruitment, employee relations, performance management, benefits administration, and policy development and implementation.
  • Strong working knowledge of HR principles and practices and applicable federal, state, and local employment laws.
  • Demonstrated experience coaching and advising managers and employees, with strong judgment, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills for navigating sensitive matters thoughtfully and objectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust at all levels and communicate sensitive information with clarity and discretion.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate and confidential records, and work independently with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated cultural humility and ability to apply an equitable, employee-centered approach to HR practices while balancing employee and organizational needs.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or comparable tools and experience with HR information systems.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Black Women for Wellness and to advancing health equity, reproductive justice, racial and gender equity, and the well-being of Black women, girls, and communities.
Valued and Preferred Experience
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR, or a comparable HR certification.
  • Experience in a nonprofit, community-based, or social justice organization, particularly one centered on Black women, women of color, or historically underserved communities.
  • Experience building or strengthening HR systems, policies, and processes within a growing organization.
  • Experience using Rippling or a similar all-in-one HR, payroll, and benefits platform.
