Licensed Practical Nurse

Summary This Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) clinical associate position is located within a Medicine Specialty Outpatient Clinics at VA St. Louis Health Care System (VASTLHCS) – St. Louis, Missouri. The incumbent is accountable for all patient care given and functions within the LPN scope of practice as it relates to the Medicine Specialty Outpatient Clinic policies. Qualifications United States Citizenship (non‑citizens only if no qualified citizens can be recruited per VA policy). English language proficiency: must be proficient in basic written and spoken English (per 38 U.S.C. §7402(d)). Graduate of a state‑approved school of practical or vocational nursing or holding a qualifying military training or equivalent. Active, full, current, and unrestricted LPN/LVN license in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or D.C. Grade‑specific criteria: GS‑3: Meets basic requirements and performs duties within scope of license. GS‑4: Six months of qualifying experience or equivalent educational and one year of nursing experience in a supervised medical facility. GS‑5: One year of qualifying experience at GS‑4 level or equivalent. GS‑6: One year of additional qualifying experience at GS‑5 level or equivalent. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide full range of practical nursing care, collaborate with RN/MD, educate patients/families, maintain documentation, and respond to emergencies. Experience with medication administration (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, IV) in accordance with facility policies. Responsibilities Provide quality patient care within LPN scope, under RN or MD/DO supervision. Observe, record, and report changes in patient condition; assist in developing and revising patient‑driven holistic life care plans. Collaborate with RN Care Manager, Nursing Assistants, Health Technicians, and other team members to deliver effective care. Educate patients and families on disease processes, medication, and self‑management. Prepare and administer prescribed medications, document administration, and monitor patient responses. Recognize urgent or emergent situations, seek assistance from RN or MD/DO, and initiate appropriate emergency interventions. Maintain equipment, safety hazards, and supply deficiencies, reporting promptly to appropriate personnel. Assist with support duties for complex diagnostic tests and specialized procedures, including patient preparation and instrument handling. Act as a preceptor for less experienced LPNs/LVNs, NAs, or HTs in support duties for complex tests/procedures. Continuously seek educational opportunities to enhance nursing knowledge and skills. Benefits Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 7:30 am–4:00 pm (rotating schedule). Competitive salary with regular salary increases; step rate may be determined after consideration of higher qualifications.
