Power Plant Technician - Mechanic

The Shawville Generating Station in Shawville, PA, is a major power facility with a 626 MW capacity. It operates two Babcock & Wilcox subcritical boilers and two GE-F2 steam turbines for Units 1–2, along with two Combustion Engineering subcritical boilers and two GE-F2 steam turbines for Units 3–4. The facility plays an important role in supporting safe, reliable, and efficient power generation for the region. Opportunity Summary The Power Plant Technician (PPT) - Mechanic supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Shawville Generating Station by performing preventive, routine, and predictive maintenance on critical mechanical equipment. Working with Operations, Maintenance, contractors, and OEM representatives, this position troubleshoots mechanical systems, supports planned outages, utilizes CMMS to document maintenance activities, and provides technical oversight of contractor work to help ensure safe, reliable plant operation. Your scope of responsibility as PPT - Mechanic includes the following primary functions: Participate in preventive, routine, and predictive maintenance programs by performing scheduled work, using the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), and collecting equipment data to support reliability improvements. Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical equipment issues, applying timely and effective resolutions. Maintain, repair, and overhaul boilers, steam turbines, and other plant mechanical equipment, including pumps, valves, fans, gearboxes, compressors, and auxiliary systems. Support planned outages by inspecting equipment, diagnosing problems, and performing repairs safely and efficiently. Collaborate with team members to execute maintenance tasks, share knowledge, and enhance overall plant performance, reliability, and safety. Assist in developing and refining preventive maintenance procedures to ensure they are comprehensive and effective. Coordinate and schedule outage-related mechanical work, ensuring efficient resource allocation and minimizing operational disruptions. Set up and operate machine shop tools to perform precision machining, ensuring proper alignment and balance of plant equipment. Operate, inspect, and maintain fossil-fueled steam plant equipment with minimal guidance while following established plant procedures. Install piping, conduit, and other components to support plant system upgrades and modifications. Read and interpret meters, gauges, and instrumentation to monitor operating conditions, including temperature, vibration, pressure, fluid levels, and water chemistry. Maintain spare parts inventory and plant documentation, including operating manuals, technical references, diagrams, and maintenance records. Provide technical oversight of contractors and outside technicians to help ensure repairs and upgrades are completed safely and in accordance with plant requirements. Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Manager or Plant Manager. Working Relationships The PPT - Mechanic reports to the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor and responds to directions from plant management. Additionally, the PPT with all plant personnel to ensure efficient operation and maintenance of the facility. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions. Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility. Fitness for Duty All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening. Work Schedule The PPT – Mechanic follows a modified DuPont rotating 12-hour shift schedule, ensuring 24/7 coverage through a structured rotation of day and night shifts that includes built-in rest days. This position will require extended hours, flexible shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed to support plant operations and business needs and may also require callout availability. Depending on the position, on-call status may or may not apply. Compensation This position offers an initial starting base-pay rate of $42.37 per hour, with progressive increases up to $51.59 per hour as required training and qualifications are completed under the CBA. The position is also eligible for an annual inventive bonus. Core Qualifications and Skills Associate degree in Plant Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Process Technology, or a related technical field preferred. Equivalent technical training, industry, or military experience may be considered in lieu of formal education. Hands‑on experience maintaining mechanical equipment in a fossil‑fueled power generation, industrial, manufacturing, or similar heavy industrial environment. Power plant mechanic, millwright, or related experience preferred. Working knowledge of steam plant mechanical systems, preventive and predictive maintenance practices, and the ability to troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul boilers, steam turbines, and balance‑of‑plant equipment. Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices and compliance with applicable safety procedures, regulations, and quality standards. Proficiency using precision measuring instruments, diagnostic equipment, and shop tools to assemble, disassemble, align, repair, and maintain plant mechanical equipment. Ability to read and interpret meters, gauges, instrumentation, and technical documentation to evaluate equipment condition and support maintenance activities. Ability to work collaboratively with Operations, Maintenance, contractors, and OEM representatives while providing technical oversight of contractor activities as assigned. Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document maintenance activities and prepare basic technical reports. Successfully achieve a passing score on the required pre‑employment Power Plant Technician testing.
