Layman Distributing is seeking an experienced, hands-on warehouse professional to join our team as a Night Warehouse Production Assistant Manager.

This is a floor-focused leadership position supporting our Night Production Manager and helping lead a fast-paced, high-volume warehouse operation of approximately 30–40 employees. We are looking for someone with significant warehouse or production experience who understands how to keep people and product moving, solve problems, maintain accountability, and help develop a strong team.

Previous management experience is preferred, but not required. We are also interested in experienced warehouse leads, team leads, supervisors, or highly experienced warehouse employees who have demonstrated strong leadership ability and are ready to take the next step into management.

This is not a desk-based management position. The successful candidate will spend the majority of the shift actively engaged on the warehouse floor.

Schedule

This position works a four-night schedule, Monday through Thursday nights, generally beginning around 5:00 PM and working until production and loading are complete.

Production volume varies from night to night, so exact start and end times may fluctuate based on operational needs.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are normally off.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain a strong and visible leadership presence throughout the warehouse floor.
• Support the Night Production Manager in the overall execution of nightly warehouse production.
• Help lead a production team of approximately 30–40 employees across all warehouse production zones.
• Execute nightly production priorities and ensure employees and area leads understand expectations.
• Monitor the overall flow of picking, QC, merging, staging, and loading.
• Identify production bottlenecks and take action before they impact completion of the shift.
• Allocate and reposition employees based on workload and operational priorities.
• Monitor productivity, accuracy, attendance, safety, and overall employee performance.
• Coach employees, address performance concerns, and administer corrective action when appropriate.
• Provide direction and accountability to area leads while helping develop additional leadership depth throughout the operation.
• Participate in interviewing and hiring night warehouse employees.
• Assist with the development and continuous improvement of a structured warehouse training program.
• Identify employees with the ability and desire to take on additional responsibility or future leadership roles.
• Ensure warehouse procedures, safety requirements, and company policies are consistently followed.
• Oversee production across dry, cooler, freezer, tobacco/cigarette, QC/merge, staging, and loading operations.
• Ensure outbound trucks are accurately loaded, properly secured, and verified before release.
• Ensure required QC and loading-verification procedures are completed accurately and consistently.
• Respond to production issues, equipment problems, staffing challenges, and other obstacles affecting the night’s operation.
• Use warehouse systems, email, spreadsheets, and other computer programs as needed.
• Assist the Night Production Manager with process improvement, employee performance, staffing, productivity, and other operational initiatives.
• Assume responsibility for the night production operation when the Night Production Manager is absent.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

• 5+ years of warehouse, distribution, production, or similar high-volume operational experience preferred.
• Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred, but not required for a candidate with strong operational experience and demonstrated leadership ability.
• Strong knowledge of warehouse production, order selection, material flow, staging, and loading.
• Experience operating forklifts, reach trucks, electric pallet jacks, and other common warehouse material-handling equipment is required.
• The ability to lead, coach, motivate, and hold employees accountable.
• The ability to oversee multiple areas and priorities while maintaining awareness of the overall operation.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• The ability to recognize problems, establish priorities, delegate effectively, and follow through to resolution.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Basic computer proficiency, including email, spreadsheets, and warehouse-related systems.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• A dependable, team-oriented approach and willingness to remain actively involved on the warehouse floor.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

• Spend the majority of the shift standing and walking throughout a warehouse environment.
• Work safely around forklifts, conveyors, pallet jacks, trucks, and other warehouse equipment.
• Work in dry, refrigerated, and freezer environments as operational needs require.
• Bend, reach, climb, push, pull, and perform other physical activities associated with warehouse operations.
• Safely lift and handle warehouse products and materials as required.
• Work a variable nightly schedule until production and loading responsibilities are complete.

About the Role

Our night production team is responsible for preparing customer orders for next-day delivery. This is a deadline-driven operation where safety, accuracy, productivity, communication, and teamwork are critical.

The Assistant Manager will work closely with the Night Production Manager while maintaining a strong presence on the warehouse floor. A major focus of this position will be developing capable leads, creating clear ownership throughout the operation, and building a team that can consistently execute without depending on any one individual.
