Performs inspections and diagnostic test on heavy duty landfill and related equipment, such as bull dozers, tractors, graders, pans, landfill compactors, front end loaders, backhoe, heavy duty trucks, solid waste site compactors, uses electrical/electronic testing devices, hydraulic controls, and pressurized instruments and gauges.

· Removes, repairs and/or replaces transmissions, differentials, clutches, fuel pumps and injectors, starters, generators, cutting blades, hydraulic assemblies, as well as oil, fuel and water pumps.

· Performs road tests of repairs as required. Completes work orders initiates parts requisitions. Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, taillights, parking lights and backing alarm.

· Responsible in assisting the Lead Mechanic or the day-to-day reports and/or documents used in reporting operational activities.

· Performs periodic surveys of equipment, property and tools and report condition to supervisor.

· To mobilize and demobilize equipment to assigned job sites.

· Responsible for installation and repair of compactor units at convenience centers.

· Responsible for installation and repair of leachate pumps.

· Troubleshoots electrical systems 110 VAC and 480 VAC.

· Replace and repair lights in landfill buildings.

· Responsible for welding and fabrication. Responsible for reporting parts used from inventory on all trucks and equipment.

· Responsible for organizing and maintaining shop neatness and cleanliness.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of the accepted semi-skilled methods, tools, and equipment utilized in heavy-duty landfill machinery and related equipment maintenance and overhaul. Considerable knowledge of the operating principals of internal combustion engines, both gasoline and diesel, knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of heavy-duty landfill equipment work. Knowledge of county purchasing and work order procedures. Knowledge of heavy-duty parts and their functions. Ability to inspect, test, repair, or replace various heavy-duty equipment parts and accessories. Ability to apply accepted safety rules, regulations and precautions. Ability to use electrical/electronic, hydraulic pressurized and other diagnostic testing devices. Ability to initiate and complete county forms, purchase orders and work

orders. Ability to follow detailed or general oral and written instructions; ability to follow work procedures within specified time rates for mechanical work, ability to lift and move mechanical parts and accessories. Ability to work independently with limited supervision, skilled in the inspection, testing, repair and replacement of various mechanical, hydraulic and electrical/electronic components of heavy-duty landfill equipment. Knowledge of effective public service, communication techniques, considerable knowledge of solid waste/recycling programs and practices. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally, ability to plan and carry out programs, ability to assist in setting goals and motivating individuals to carry out goals. Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work, perform semi-skilled work with the use of a variety of hand and power tools necessary in performing mechanical and maintenance work. Ability to work in an environment which may include exposure to noise, vehicle exhaust fumes, vibrations and variance in temperature, weather conditions.

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or GED, and a minimum of at least one (1) year of progressive experience as a semi-skilled mechanic in the repair of automotive or heavy equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

Must obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6 months of the date of hire.

Must obtain Safety Certification to inspect county fleet vehicles within the 6 months of hire.
