Clinical Pharmacist, Oncology
The Clinical Pharmacist, Oncology provides specialized pharmaceutical care to support the safe, effective, and evidence-based treatment of oncology patients in an acute care hospital setting. This role interprets, evaluates, verifies, and dispenses medication orders, ensuring appropriate drug therapy and identifying potential medication-related issues in close collaboration with prescribers. The Clinical Pharmacist reviews the accuracy of medications prepared by pharmacy support personnel, serves as a subject matter expert on oncology drug information, educates patients and caregivers on oncology therapies, completes medication history documentation, and participates in quality improvement initiatives. The position also includes supervisory responsibilities for pharmacy support personnel to ensure medications are prepared and distributed in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and high standards of oncology patient care.
Responsibilities
- Interpret and evaluate oncology medication orders to ensure appropriate drug selection, dosage, route, and duration of therapy for each patient.
- Identify potential adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, contraindications, and other medication-related concerns, and contact prescribers as needed to clarify or adjust therapy.
- Review, fill, and dispense physician medication orders and prescriptions in accordance with hospital policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Check and verify medication orders and prescriptions filled by pharmacy support personnel, confirming that products are correctly prepared, labeled, and packaged.
- Provide accurate, evidence-based drug information as a subject matter expert in oncology pharmacotherapy to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Educate patients and caregivers on oncology medications, including indications, administration, side effects, and monitoring requirements, and complete thorough medication history documentation.
- Perform and contribute to pharmacy and oncology-related quality improvement activities, including medication use evaluations and process improvement initiatives.
- Supervise pharmacy support personnel within the assigned work area, providing direction, oversight, and feedback to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant medication preparation and distribution.
- Ensure medications and related products are prepared and distributed in accordance with established procedures, schedules, and clinical protocols.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary care teams to optimize oncology treatment plans and support best practices in medication management.
- Apply professional principles to collect information from diverse sources, perform analyses, and summarize data to solve medication-related problems or design improvements to pharmacy systems and programs.
- Use strong communication skills to address conflicting views or issues, mediate fair solutions, and document recommendations and clinical interventions with well-developed writing skills.
Essential Skills
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy, with a Doctorate degree in Pharmacy preferred.
- Three to four years of previous Pharmacist experience preferred, with prior hospital-based oncology pharmacy experience highly preferred.
- Pediatric acute care oncology experience.
- Hospital pharmacy experience with a focus on oncology patient care.
- Current license and registration by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy.
- Strong clinical knowledge of oncology pharmacotherapy and related supportive care medications.
- Ability to interpret and evaluate complex oncology medication orders and identify potential adverse reactions or interactions.
- Skills to collect information from diverse clinical and data sources, apply professional principles in performing analyses, and summarize information to solve problems or design relatively complex systems and programs.
- Communication skills to effectively address conflicting views or issues, mediate fair solutions, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
- Well-developed writing skills to document clinical recommendations, medication histories, and quality improvement activities accurately and clearly.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in reviewing, verifying, and dispensing medications.
- Ability to supervise and provide guidance to pharmacy support personnel in a clinical setting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Doctorate degree in Pharmacy (PharmD) preferred for advanced clinical practice in oncology.
- Previous hospital-based oncology pharmacy experience highly preferred, including experience with chemotherapy and supportive care regimens.
- Experience working in pediatric acute care oncology environments is an advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to participate in and lead quality improvement initiatives within the pharmacy or oncology service line.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to improve medication-use processes and systems.
- Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced acute care environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development in oncology pharmacotherapy and evidence-based practice.
Work Environment
This role is based in a hospital pharmacy environment with a primary focus on oncology patient care, including acute and pediatric oncology settings. The schedule consists of Monday through Friday 8-hour shifts, primarily during daytime hours, with participation in a rotating weekend schedule approximately every fourth weekend. The position involves close collaboration with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in inpatient and possibly outpatient oncology areas. Work is performed in a clinical pharmacy setting where accuracy, adherence to protocols, and compliance with regulatory standards are essential. The environment requires consistent attention to detail, safe handling of oncology medications, and effective communication with both clinical staff and patients.

The pay range for this position is $150000.00 - $200000.00/yr. Full benefits and potential for sign on bonus.
