Signal System Technician Reference Number: 4688 | Department: Engineering | Pay: $48.72/hr Position Overview We are seeking a skilled professional to join our team as a Signal System Technician. In this role, you will play a crucial part in ensuring the safety and efficiency of our railroad operations. Key Responsibilities Conduct signal system testing in accordance with FRA and UPRR requirements. Lead the installation, repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance of railroad signals and grade crossing warning devices. Perform thorough inspections of signal circuitry, equipment, and systems to identify and address problems and defects. Carry out maintenance, repair, and replacement tasks for signal communication circuitry, systems, and components. Utilize troubleshooting techniques to resolve malfunctions in signal circuitry and equipment. Assemble and disassemble signal crossing warning device equipment as needed. Plan, organize, and track information and activities related to signal circuitry and equipment, providing guidance to team members. Take responsibility for excavation work, including digging holes and trenches required for installation. Adhere to company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Foster positive working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, contractors, and customers and handle conflict situations effectively. Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations, particularly those mandated by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Undertake additional duties as assigned by the supervisor to contribute to overall efficiency. Certifications & Requirements Union Pacific Certified Driver – required during probationary period. Valid driver’s license. Acceptable driving record per your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). Meet FMCSA medical qualifications for commercial motor vehicle drivers. Qualifications – Required Valid driver's license. Proficiency in working with print and digital information. Strong comprehension, interpretation, and accurate recording of both technical and non‑technical information. Computer literacy and basic keyboarding skills. Excellent communication skills. Understanding and adherence to safety rules; ability to identify potential safety risks. Effective communication in English, speaking clearly and concisely. Capability to work independently and in group settings. Successful completion of an English assessment before interview. Qualifications – Preferred Completion of a recognized formal electrical training program. Associate's degree or higher in electrical engineering or electronic technology. Experience working shifts, including overtime, holidays, and weekends. Ability to work in confined spaces with adherence to safety protocols. Willingness to work outdoors regardless of weather conditions. Proficiency operating construction equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, cranes. Familiarity with working around moving heavy equipment. Previous experience with railroad signaling systems. Background in construction work with relevant knowledge and skills. Experience using personal protective equipment (e.g., shock and arc flash clothing, safety glasses, boots, hard hats). Comprehensive knowledge of the electrical field, supported by documented work history and references. Possession of a certificate in electricity or electronics, or equivalent education. Physical Requirements Pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT). Normal color vision for visual signal interpretation. Capability to stand for extended periods and change positions periodically. Capacity to engage in physically demanding tasks, including bending, stooping, kneeling. Ability to lift and carry items up to 65 lbs and push/pull objects up to 119 lbs. Ability to walk, climb, and maintain balance on ladders, poles, and equipment safely. Frequent coordinated hand movements to grasp, place, or move objects. Frequent walking to access the work site. Work Conditions Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship. Operate company vehicles and travel within assigned geographic territory.
