Mechanic

Reports to: Director of Business Services and Transportation

Salary: $30.00 - $34.00 per hour (Based on experience)

Terms of Employment: 12-month

FLSA Status: Exempt

Qualifications

• Knowledge of tools, procedures, technical skills, and safety rules used in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered equipment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and customer service skills; ability to identify problems and develop solutions.
• Knowledge of applicable Federal and State regulations.
• Operational knowledge of motorized gasoline, diesel, and alternative fueled vehicles, and shop equipment and tools.
• Ability to schedule and set priorities for work to be accomplished.
• Ability to inspect equipment and diagnose mechanical defects.
• Propane/gasoline medium duty truck engine experience preferred.
• ASE Certification(s) is a plus.
• Must be able to lift heavy equipment including brake drums, tires, ladders, tool chests, and floor jacks as necessary.
• Must be able to operate bench grinder, torch, drill press, jack and jack stands, Sawzall, oil pumps, power washer, parts cleaner, and other required hand tools.
• Must pass required background checks, physical examination, and a drug/alcohol screening.
• This is a safety sensitive position; all duties are regulated by the DOT.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform thorough and accurate Preventative Maintenance (PM) inspections as required by District policy or applicable law.
• Be knowledgeable of and adhere to the law, including but not limited to, the Illinois School Code, State Board of Education rules and regulations, and School Board policies and procedures, and contractual obligations, where applicable.
• Complete all required PM operations per schedule, including lubrication, fluid changes, brake adjustments, and tire rotation.
• Review technical reports, vehicle maintenance manuals, electrical diagrams and meter readings to evaluate, diagnose and repair vehicles.
• Perform unscheduled maintenance as directed by the appropriate supervisor.
• Perform complex repairs including engine, electrical, fuel, brake, and exhaust systems; interpret and work from drawings, specifications, and technical materials.
• Utilize ladders and elevation equipment to access roofs of buses and elevated fixtures for repairs and maintenance.
• Operate CDL and Non-CDL vehicles (buses and vans) to perform road tests and shuttle vehicles in and out of the garage.
• Perform DVIR repairs daily based upon fleet needs and work orders submitted by drivers.
• Assist with starting buses for AM/PM routes as needed (jump-starting, ether application, etc.).
• Sweep shop floor, wipe down equipment, tools, and work stations; mop spills and manage oil reservoir disposal.
• Conduct monthly inventory; order parts using the computer system and restock the tool crib.
• Perform emergency roadside service as needed, operating a replacement vehicle or utility truck.
• Respond to emergency conditions including after-hours calls, extended hours, or weekend work as required.
• Document repairs and parts on work orders completely and accurately.
• Maintain tools and workplaces in safe, neat, and orderly condition.
• Maintain thorough familiarity with all safety provisions associated with vehicle maintenance.
• Maintain full understanding of OSHA standards and provisions.
• Understand and conform to State EPA regulations regarding disposal of toxic waste substances.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Business Services and Transportation or designee.

Education, Certification, and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized vehicle and equipment repair courses.
• Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Passenger endorsement and DOT physical, or ability to attain within 3 months of hire.
• Must provide own hand tools required for regular maintenance.

Tech A: At least five (5) to seven (7) years of hands-on experience with gas/diesel engines and large buses/vehicles in an automotive, school bus, trucking, or heavy equipment environment.

Class 7 Inspection license required.

Tech B: At least four (4) years of experience as a mechanic in an automotive, school bus, trucking, or heavy equipment environment. Class 7 Inspection license required.

Tech C: At least two (2) years of experience as a mechanic in an automotive, school bus, trucking, or heavy equipment environment.
