Space Nuclear Advisor (Part-Time)

Overview This senior advisor is a nuclear expertise position within the National Security Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, focusing on advanced space nuclear reactor technologies, emerging national security threats, and strategic program development. Responsibilities Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) with internal stakeholders and external sponsors to develop concepts and execute strategies for advanced space nuclear reactor technologies and counter national security threats. Analyze complex engineering topics, evaluating data and dynamic factors to generate optimal solutions. Select appropriate strategy approaches, methods, techniques, and criteria to achieve objectives. Maintain awareness of project issues and initiatives, proposing improvements and expanding the program portfolio. Facilitate collaboration among multidisciplinary PNNL teams and external partners, communicating frequently with project contacts. Travel occasionally to interact with stakeholders and collaborators. Manage sensitive information while influencing positive outcomes and ensuring compliance with U.S. national security responsibilities. Lead technical projects with required leadership experience. Qualifications Minimum: BS/BA and 13 years of relevant experience, OR MS/MA or higher and 11 years of relevant experience. Preferred: 10+ years of technical program leadership in nuclear-related areas, advanced degree in mechanical, nuclear, aerospace, materials, or radiochemistry with 10+ years of mission leadership. Expert-level technical direction on strategic projects at national or international level. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to develop technical solutions with highly complex scope based on national policies and industry standards. Experience with business development and sponsor relationship management. Experience with spacecraft/satellite research, development, design, and operations. Experience with technical project leadership in nuclear, radiochemistry, materials science or engineering. Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment Not Applicable Additional Information This is a part-time position anticipated to work 20 hours per week. Position requires ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance. Background investigation includes employment, education, financial, criminal history, and reference interviews, reviewing foreign connections, drug use, foreign influence, and overall conduct. Requirements include U.S. citizenship, eligibility for 10 CFR 710 access, and pre-employment drug testing consistent with federal requirements. Testing Designated Position The position is a Testing Designated Position requiring pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal substances, including marijuana, in accordance with the Controlled Substances Act. Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements Employees must obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identification Verification (PIV) credential and undergo a tiered federal background investigation.
