Substation Physical Designer

Job Title: Substation Physical Designer
Location: Birmingham, AL
Duration: 3+ years

Position Overview:
Responsible for creating 2D/3D design drawings for Client Transmission & Distribution substations. Work includes developing physical layouts, specifying materials, supporting design standards, and coordinating with engineers, vendors, and field teams. Site visits and occasional overnight travel (~25%) required.

Key Responsibilities:

Produce 2D/3D substation designs: foundations, grounding, conduits, switchgear, substation layouts, switch houses, electrical bus.
Specify, order, and manage materials for design packages.
Transmit drawings and specifications using engineering transmittal systems.
Collaborate with engineers, construction, project management, and maintenance teams.
Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and internal committees to resolve equipment/material issues.
Support construction via site visits (pre-, during, post-construction).

Qualifications:
Education:

Bachelor's in Engineering/Engineering Technology, or
Associate + 5 yrs relevant experience, or
High school + 8 yrs relevant experience

Experience / Skills:

Knowledge of electrical substation equipment and operations (preferred).
Familiarity with transmission/distribution systems, utility grid operations, and basic power system theory.
Understanding of NESC, NEC, OSHA standards (preferred).
Ability to create designs from single/three-line diagrams.
Proficiency in 2D/3D modeling: SDS Inventor, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, or Autodesk 3D (P4A).
Experience with document management, estimating, Primavera P6, progress reporting (preferred).
Strong communication, problem-solving, teamwork, mentoring, and organizational skills.
Ability to visualize 3D layouts and spatial connections of equipment/materials.
