Senior Staff Accountant

Under the supervision of the Comptroller, a Senior Staff Accountant is responsible for assisting the Comptroller with monthly, quarterly and year-end financial reporting and reconciliations. The Senior Staff Accountant must have great attention to detail, communication, and organization skills and the ability to work in a fast paced and high-volume work environment. The Senior Staff Accountant must also exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality with regard to this position’s responsibilities. A Senior Staff Accountant is expected to operate with significantly more autonomy than a Staff Accountant, and must demonstrate the discretion necessary to conduct independent financial analysis. 2. Functions: a. Maintains accounting controls by following policies and procedures and complying with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements; b. Analyzes information and options by developing, maintaining and verifying spreadsheet reports; c. Prepares general ledger entries by maintaining records and files; d. Maintains fixed asset records and reconciles to General Ledger balance; e. Maintains prepaid asset records and reconciles to General Ledger balance; f. Maintains monthly budget to actual analysis/reporting; g. Acts as the liaison with other department managers on the coding of requisition/invoice approvals; h. Reviews/approves G/L coding of A/P voucher listing (prior to A/P processing); i. Oversees and/or prepares IRS 1099 reporting; j. Assists/prepares all other IRS tax reporting, as needed; k. Acts as the backup for the Senior Payroll & Benefits Specialist’s payroll functions and performs full cycle payroll functions one time each quarter; l. Assists with annual statutory reporting; m. Performs monthly bank reconciliations; n. Assists with the administration of the Unclaimed Property Act/Escheat process is accordance with state requirement and filing deadlines; o. Assists with investment reporting; p. Assists in maintaining the General Ledger; q. Assists in year-end and government entity audits; r. Performs all work in accordance with NJSIG processes and procedures; s. Assists with special projects as needed/directed by the Comptroller and/or the Chief Financial Officer due to unexpected workload/overflow, cycle-driven, seasonal or weather-affecting issues; and, t. Manages special projects 3. Qualifications: a. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance or Accounting, or currently enrolled in a degree granting program; b. Master’s degree in Business Administration, Finance or Accounting or Certified Public Accountant designation preferred; c. Minimum of five years’ accounting experience; d. Experience with surplus lines and/or commercial lines insurance carrier is preferred; e. Experience with PeopleSoft and ImageRight preferred; f. Ability to work in an office environment with moderate noise level, ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and the ability to travel to other work sites as required; and, g.
